Drop it like it’s hot – the ‘drop’ explained
This is the difference between the heel and the forefoot measurements, or in other words, how much your toes ‘drop’ below your heel. Why is this important? Because a higher drop can lead to more heel striking and also transfers some strain away from the lower leg and up towards the knee. A lower drop will shift the load further down to your calf. Check with an expert, choose what feels comfortable to you and take into account your running mechanics and history of injuries.

5/5 Stars | Womens | 254 g | 8 mm Drop | $190
www.adidas.ca

The Terrex Agravic 3 felt comfortable, plush and nimble on the rocky terrain around Batawa Ski Hill. A versatile shoe that performs well on both gentle gravel trails and technical terrain. I loved its balance of underfoot feel and cushion, making it perfect for easy recovery runs on soft ground. Lightweight with good grip, the 4mm lugged Continental rubber outsole gripped in nicely on sharp turns and rolling terrain.

The Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra is fast! With Adidas Lightstrike Pro foam and energy rods, this shoe provides excellent forward propulsion and energy return that is best suited for fast running on non-technical terrain or gravel. On rougher trails, the high stack height and the narrow heel felt unstable. Bottom line, if you want a FAST shoe for smooth terrain then the Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra is an excellent choice.

I appreciated how well the ALTRA Experience Wild retains the light and bouncy feel of the road version. The Experience Wild is a 4mm drop shoe with enough cushion to feel plush and bouncy without a high stack. The sole offers great traction in steep and technical terrain without feeling heavy or slow on smoother trails. A great shoe for fast, long and hilly trail workouts on all terrain.

Barely there, just enough to care. With its luxurious wide toe-box and natural foot-shape is there is plenty of room for toe splay and foot play. This is a benefit for people who run long and want comfort rather than the tunnel-fit of a conventional trail shoe. The barefoot feel you get resulting from the close to and zero-drop leaves you with a no questions asked, grounded feel on rocky terrain and trails alike. Staying stable and trail connected is easy with the Vibram “mega-grip”.

A winter-specific adaption to the renowned Norvan 4, this shoe adds a GORE-TEX upper and ankle-gaiter to combat harsh conditions. While the shoes responsiveness, grip and agility are retained from the Norvan 4, a large flaw in the design is only having a single quick-lace entry through the upper which prevents the shoe from comfortably cinching down to provide a performance fit.

I put the Fuji Lite on and felt confident enough to go straight into a speed training workout on my local trail and was not disappointed. It is fast and lightweight, with a lugged outsole that gives confidence over the trails, grass and roads. It is an excellent fast trail shoe and versatile for everyday running. The upper is very comfortable and I like the lacing system with the elastic lace garage for keeping things tidy. I could see racing shorter single track trail races in these shoes and relying on them for winter running and trail speed days.

This workhorse shoe has made improvements in weight, responsiveness and traction with its latest version. The shoe would improve flexibility and ground feel by removing the unnecessary rock plate. While the upper felt compliant and durable, the laces and eyelets do not cinch down and form a secure foot hold; this is especially a downfall for narrow feet as the shoe runs wide and long.

The Brooks Cascadia 19 delivers stability and support with its outer design and built-in rock plate, while still feeling soft, responsive, and shock-absorbing underfoot. It’s relatively light for a trail runner, making it versatile for long runs or rugged terrain. The traction is great, and it has breaking lugs on the back to support with downhill traction. The shoe fits true to size, but if you typically wear wide shoes, go for the wide width option as the standard width I found to be a touch narrow.

Right out of the box, I’m impressed. The outsole is the standout feature of this shoe. It’s grippy and ready to tackle technical terrain. True to its name, the Pure Trail X delivers a connected feel to the trail. The combination of foam, firmness, and the shoe’s sturdy outsole creates a super stable trail running experience that will keep you upright in some of the gnarliest terrain. I hadn’t run in a Craft before, but this one may have just converted me. The shoe is ultra-light and incredibly responsive; as soon as you lace it up it feels alive, driving you to pick up the pace. The mesh upper is breathable and lightweight, yet the reinforced toe box gives confidence if you catch a branch or rock. The build feels solid overall. When running at a good pace it feels smooth and stable with good rebound, and high-traction which excels across conditions and terrain, giving you the traction and footing you want when the surface changes.

Columbia
Konos Trillium ATR

3.5/5 Stars | Womens | 336 g | 8 mm Drop | $160
www.columbiasportswear.ca

My favourite feature of this shoe is how well it keeps my feet dry during long, wet trail runs. The upper is made with OutDry waterproof technology, which seals out water while still allowing the shoe to breathe. Even after soggy runs, my feet stayed dry and comfortable. The Konos feels soft underfoot and absorbs impact well, making it great for longer runs or recovery days. However, I wouldn’t recommend this shoe for runners with narrow feet or those who prefer a snug, locked-in fit. Overall, this is a versatile, entry-level trail runner that shines in wet conditions and offers plush cushioning.

Having not run in a Columbia brand shoe before, I was pleasantly surprised with the Columbia Konos Trillium ATR. Designed predominantly as a trail shoe, the Konos Trillium transitions very well to a variety of surfaces including light trail, gravel and even road (think gravel bike…but for your feet!). The higher stack height midsole gives a cushioned road shoe feel on hard surfaces, yet still maintains a stable and responsive feel on the trails. This is a highly versatile “one shoe quiver” that performs well on a variety of surfaces and won’t break the bank.

4/5 Stars | Mens | 300 g | 7 mm Drop | $190
www.hellyhansen.com

The Helly Hansen Kestrel TR offers solid grip and cushioning with a roomy midfoot and wide toe box. However, its sharp taper into the toe cap may cramp bigger toes, and the loose midfoot fit requires tight lacing that brings the eyelets close together for a secure hold. The cushioning strikes a good balance—comfortable without being too soft. Overall, a well-built trail shoe that suits runners with a high, broad midfoot but may not fit everyone perfectly.

This shoe is built for the long haul! I took the Mafate 5 straight out for a wet and muddy long run. The aggressive outsole immediately inspired confidence in slick conditions. The platform is stable and soft, without feeling completely disconnected from the terrain. This would be a great choice for those looking to log big miles in challenging terrain, while easing impact on the body. I’d be remiss not to mention the Neon Rose/Black colourway – while surely not for everyone, this should be a hit.

The shoes felt surprisingly lightweight thanks to the Float Pro midsole and provided great tactile trail feedback underfoot. The most striking feature of this trail shoe was the Vibram rubber outsole that has well over 100 tiny grippy lugs that I haven’t seen before on trail shoes. After running on various surfaces, this grip felt best suited for hardpacked trails or pavement, and not for muddy or loose rock trails. The white colourway looks fantastic out of the box, but I don’t see them staying that way for long!

The Tomir is a versatile trail shoe, and this Gore-Tex version is perfect for longer wet weather trail runs in varied terrain. It performs well at speed on the flat trail, but running the technical single track is where it shines. The grip and deep lugs of the outsole make the shoe rugged and trustworthy over the rocky, technical terrain I run on. I like the tongue, and the flat laces, as they provide a non-slip and precise fit, but was surprised there was no lace storage; a feature I have come to appreciate in premium trail shoes.
Check with an expert, choose what feels comfortable to you, and take into account your running mechanics and history of injuries.

Adidas Supernova Rise Running Shoe

www.adidas.ca

From the moment you slide your foot into this shoe you’re met with a perfect balance of support and bounce. It fits true to size and after only a few runs breaking them in, I am hooked. What truly sets the Supernova Rise apart is its cushioning. Because of this, the shoe is slightly less nimble but I wouldn’t hold that against it. Without a doubt, this shoe is a fantastic option for neutral runners as it offers a stellar combination of comfort, responsiveness, and durability. The Supernova Rise is now my go-to shoe for daily training and longer runs.

The Altra Experience Flow shoe is their first non-zero drop shoe at 4mm. The roomy toe box remains true to Altra’s spacious and comfortable design, but now offers a compression-molded midsole with rocker shape. The cushioning was light offering solid impact absorption without sacrificing responsiveness. The shoe’s lightweight construction and breathable upper kept my feet cool. Overall, Altra delivers an enjoyable experience at speedier paces and can help you ease into future zero drop shoe.

4.5/5 Stars | Men | 8.4 oz | 4 mm Drop | $180
www.altrarunning.com

Previously known as the AltraFWD Experience this daily running shoe has a low, 4 mm drop. It has a spacious toe-box and the midsole features a compression-molded EVA foam that makes it feel firm and comfortable while running. The updated and improved upper design makes for a pleasant fit. I have not historically used Altra shoes, as I found the zero-drop design less well-suited for my running gait. However, the 4 mm drop is enough to make this shoe feel more familiar to me, and I have used it for numerous long runs, without issue.

4/5 Stars | Women | 7.7 oz | 8 mm Drop | $180
www.asics.com/ca

It’s not the bounciest shoe I’ve tried, but it’s close. The oversized base provides a stable landing, which is a good thing considering its stack height. The 8 mm drop and aggressive rocker means you’ll roll onto your toes with every step and increase the efficiency of your run. Great for runners new to the pavement. The stretchy upper ensures a comfortable fit out of the box, but to be honest, this is too much shoe for me.

The Gel Nimbus 26 soft cushioning properties is best suited for runners prone to injuries or the high-mileage runner looking to add a shoe into their weekly rotation with the goal of decreasing impact and wear and tear on their body. ASICS soft cushioning properties without a rocker-outsole, and prioritizing recycled materials, makes this shoe unique. The engineered knit upper provides excellent support and comfort but lacks ventilation which is noticeable on a longer run. Buy this shoe if you are looking for less impact on your body and on the environment.

This is a great shoe for logging easy miles. The ample toe box kept my toes happy, and the firm cushioning provided plenty of protection for my joints. The rocker is subtle, so the shoe feels very stable, and
I even took it out on some urban trails. This shoe does not have great energy return, so I would not recommend it for faster workouts.
It fits true to size.

I have owned many versions of this shoe over the years, and it has never disappointed me. Once again, we have a winner with the Torin 8. It fits true to size, features a nice wide toe box, and offers plenty of cushioning. It feels great right out of the box and feels light but stable for hard, fast running. I really appreciate the new stiff heel counter, which has previously been a problem for me with some Altra models. If you want comfort and cushioning, the Altra Torin 8 is a must-have!

This Craft road racing has some of the bounciest foam I have felt in this type of shoe. The outsole has great traction and the design of the shoe offers amazing stability. I was pleasantly surprised by the HOKA Clifton, and after a 10-kilometre run, I’d definitely add it to my daily trainer rotation. Despite its high stack, it felt lightweight and stable, with just the right amount of softness. The early-stage Meta-Rocker provides a smooth, “glide” feel—and I loved it. Built to grind out miles, it’s less ideal for speedwork but great for runners seeking a firmer, ground-connected feel with comfort. A solid choice for consistent mileage or a soft, reliable ride.

Kip, Kip Hooray. I love this shoe; the Kiprun from Decathlon. If it were a reindeer, it would be Dasher. Why? A ridiculously light upper, roomy toe box, and a lace-lock system that holds the heel deep and true. No slipping, sliding, binding, or grinding. The upper sits on a cushion that’s friendly for both forefoot and heel strikers. The midsole/outsole has enough cushion to be tender and not rob you of rebound, making it comfortable for longer runs and resilient enough for your shorter, faster efforts.

The Vomero is a cushioned trainer that gives a responsive and fast feel. I love this shoe for my faster tempo training days, where I want that speedy feel without wearing a racing shoe. This shoe delivers more than meets the eye.

A padded heel cup holds the foot steady, and the heel loop protects the structure. The thicker mesh may feel warm in summer. Note that the laces are shorter than other brands, which I prefer. It’s a bit tight with thicker socks but fine with thinner race socks. It feels light and responsive. Great on predictable surfaces but a bit unstable on rough terrain. The shallow, narrow heel cup is comfortable with no slippage, with decent cushioning but runs a bit firm. This was my first time training in On shoes, and I was impressed. The shoe moves really well underfoot, with a smooth transition from strike to toe-off, and with just enough stability through the heel cup to keep you well protected through longer runs or days when you are fatigued. A bit more width in the forefoot suited me and I have only positive impressions as to its functionality.

The Saucony Ride has been known as a “do it all” training shoe, and the Ride 18 is no exception. Lighter weight, it has a PWRrun foam sole, which makes it feel springy and fast. However, the lightness in weight is at the expense of grip. On a wet test run, this shoe felt slippery and didn’t provide very good traction on streets and sidewalks. I expect this shoe will perform best on dry days. Its thin breathable upper allows the foot to feel airy. The Ride 18 fits quite wide, with a much roomier toebox. Overall, it carries the torch in this line well and is sure to keep the Saucony faithful happy.

What’s the ‘Drop’?

This is the difference between the heel and the forefoot measurements, or in other words, how much your toes ‘drop’ below your heel. Why is this important? Because a higher drop can lead to more heel striking and also transfers some strain away from the lower leg and up towards the knee. A lower drop will shift the load further down to your calf. Check with an expert, choose what feels comfortable to you and take into account your running mechanics and history of injuries.

ADIDAS
Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra

4.5/5 Stars | Women | $300 | Weight: 9.88 oz | Drop: 8 mm
www.adidas.ca

These shoes live up to the hype! The Lightstrike foam combined with the integrated energy rods provides maximum cushioning and excellent energy return. The highly rockered sole gives a road running shoe feel, while the traction performs well on mud, slush and rocks. These shoes fly over maintained trails, but are unstable on cambered trails. The toe box is generous and the sizing is large, so size down a ½ size.

ALTRA
Lone Peak 9

4.5/5 Stars | Men | $180 | Weight: 11.02 oz. | Drop: 0 mm
www.altrarunning.com

This is the perfect affordable trail shoe for training and racing. With the wide forefront, snug heel cup, flexible upper and zero drop this shoe is built for trail confidence and comfort. Even on a frosty wood bridge and wet steps the traction was outstanding ultimately translating to faster speeds. On a technical section I stubbed my toe on a rock with no consequence because of the improved toe cap. The cushioning is enough to soften the ride but feel the ground. It simply works well for trail running but likely not recommended for sharp rocky mountain efforts. The wider forefoot also increases the surface traction area for those slippery steep slopes and downhills. This shoe is a no BS workhorse with all the fundamentals done right!

As someone curious about Altra but hesitant to go fully zero drop, I love this new 4mm option and lets me experience the benefits of the Altra brand. The outsole grip is fantastic, providing confidence on rugged terrain. Despite their wide look, these shoes fit like a sock and the extra toe room that is unique to the Altra brand, gets the tiny muscles in your feet engaged providing lots of proprioceptive feedback you want on a trail.

ARC’TERYX
Sylan

5/5 Stars | Women | $240 | Weight: 10 oz | Drop: 6 mm
www.arcteryx.com

The Arc’teryx Sylan is a solid choice for all terrains. It runs large, so consider sizing down a half size, but the wide toe box accommodates broader feet. The knit collar keeps debris out, and there’s a convenient garage to tuck away your laces. With thicker tread and pronounced lugs, grip is secure, and the impressive rocker design encourages faster movement. Despite the lack of a rock plate, the shoe delivers a smooth, cushioned ride that still feels protective underfoot.

Arc’teryx has nailed it with the Sylan! Known for researching and developing to the ends of the earth, you can tell they have taken no shortcuts with the Sylvan. I love the knitted upper, lace pocket, extra protection around the forefoot, the rocker sole, and amazing Vibram grip. As the trails get wetter and the rocks get more slick, the fit, the feel, and the grip has performed every step of the way. Every small detail adds up to the Sylvan being a shoe that I cannot wait to put on and blast through the trails. Fits true to size.

www.asics.com/ca

Think running on clouds. Super comfortable upper with a lace tuck system that actually stays put. GUIDESOLE technology encourages an easy forward momentum for a flowy ride.  Traction on climbs was excellent with no energy wasted and an effortless push off.  The max cushion reduced impact providing a comfortable descent. I found the absorption affected the response time on technical cornering and I’d choose a lower stack shoe for this terrain. I’m excited to try them on snow!

www.asics.com/ca

I’ve always been a fan of Asics shoes and this new Fuji Lite 5 is no exception. I would call this shoe a great all-around shoe for a runner who runs on the road to get to the smooth trails. The toe box is spacious for wide feet, heel cup snug for hill climbing, and the stack height is perfect for smooth non-technical trail. The cushioning is ample for some mid-range pavement runs but caters to trail adventures of all distances. The tread is ideal for hard pack and tacky trails. Extreme mud and rocky ground is a stretch for this affordable shoe. I would not hesitate to trail race in these 4mm drop, lightweight shoes (262 grams). All in all, great value and a very versatile shoe that looks good charging down the trails.

BROOKS
Cascadia 18

4/5 Stars | Women | $170.00 | Weight: 9.9 oz |Drop: 8 mm
www.brooksrunning.com

The newest version of Brooks’ Cascadia Trail Shoe lives up to being reliable out on the trails while running longer miles on rugged terrain. I have trained in many generations of the Cascadia, including last year’s Cascadia 17, and there have only been a few tweaks made to this year’s Cascadia 18. The overall fit is comfortable, and continues to fit my foot true to size. Similar to the Cascadia 17, it has an outsole that can handle most terrain, including both slippery and dry rock.  The only difference between last year’s Cascadia 17 and this year’s Cascadia 18 seems to be the upper. The high-wear areas have been bulked up with an extra layer on the mesh for improved wear but this makes it slightly heavier. Overall, the Cascadia trail shoe is known for being heavier than other trail shoes on the market, making it an ideal high-mileage rugged trainer.

It’s been many years since I’ve run in a Cascadia model. Familiar, stable and trustworthy are how I would describe it. The Cascadia is many runners’ first trail shoe, and for good reason. It’s durable and versatile – a true all-rounder. It’s not the lightest, or the flashiest, but there’s a reason it’s been around for 18 versions and has a strong following – It’s a workhorse in the trails that won’t let you down.

HELLY HANSEN
Skyhawk Trail

5/5 Stars | Women | $175 | Weight: 9.17 oz | Drop: 7 mm
www.hellyhansen.com

I love this shoe. Who knew Helly Hansen made lightweight, performance trail shoes? They are light and bouncy, and the rock plate gives stability and protection. This shoe is narrow, which means it fits snug around the midfoot. They might be the most comfortable running shoes I’ve ever tested, and I didn’t want to take them off. I recommend the Skyhawk TR for those who want to run fast on rough, technical trails. They are going straight into my rotation.

The Skyhawk Trail is a lightweight, versatile trail runner with a cushioned midsole and a breathable upper.  The rock plate insert provides protection on rocky terrain and adds some stability to the midsole. However, I found the midsole a bit stiff on flowy trails. The tread design delivered ample grip on a variety of surfaces. If you are looking for a shoe that provides moderate cushioning without sacrificing agility, consider the Skyhawk.

I felt so free, fast and nimble running around Batawa Ski Hill in the Tecton X3. Arguably, the best trail shoe I have ever laced up. It’s evident a lot of thought and research went into the design; every detail seems to be well thought. I loved how plush fast and bouncy the midsole felt–similar feeling to a road carbon shoe. Light, fast and responsive, I’ll be wearing the Tecton X3 in my next trail race!

The Tecton x 3 is worth every penny. HOKA hits a homerun with a plush, yet responsive trail shoe that is exceptionally light and stable. This unique combination is made possible by strategically placed carbon fibre plates. A spacious toe-box breathes well and is supportive. The Vibram outsole provides the traction you need without adding excess weight. Finally, a distinct knit collar keeps out unwanted debris so that you can perform on race day, and it adds just enough ankle support to confidently open up on a big descent.

This shoe is described as a road runner for icy conditions. I’m on the West Coast, so this time of year we don’t have much ice, but we do have mud! These shoes fit my feet well right out of the box. I love the Boa lacing system and that locked in feel. The shoe felt fairly light and nimble in my test runs, and the built-in lugs provided great grip on mud and grass. I can’t speak to the grip on ice, but the lugs do seem like they would do a nice job in true winter conditions.

This was an all-round rugged and versatile trail shoe. I tested it on flat gravel, rocky elevation and muddy trails and was pleased with the performance, especially the awesome tread. A shoe that’s true to you, if you are like me. Lean, light and agile. The snug heel fit wide toe box made for a confident comfortable run. I picked a route single track to rocky ridges to shallow stream crossing, wrapping with a steep dirty, loose gravel descent. The ATC rubber outsole provided great grip, wet or dry. The lugs provide grip, but are unobtrusive, might need more on technical mountain trips but crazy comfortable on my trails. The firewire lacing made for terrific stability throughout the entirety of the foot, heel to toe, whether I was grinding uphill or speeding down. The single layer mesh outer results in a shoe that dries quick, breathes easy and avoids hot spots (potential blisters. Love the shoe, but white? Who picks white for a trail shoe! A winner on the trails.

This trail shoe was immediately comfortable when I put it on my feet. The upper fabric was soft, and arch support sufficient for both neutral and mild pronation feet. The toe box felt wider than past Nike’s shoes I’ve tested making for a better fit. The cushioning in the shoes felt great and it was quite responsive on the trails. The lugs offered good traction and I appreciate the Vibram soles. The shoe felt durable and although it looks slightly bulking, it didn’t feel as such during my run.

A great all round trail shoe built to last and seemingly to get better with wear. The first feature I noticed on these shoes were the asymmetrical lacing system and padded tongue designed to reduce pressure points on the top of the foot. This was definitely the case when I got out to test the shoe. The shoe felt snug and supportive. The toe box provided ample room for my toes to splay. They fit true to size with a secure heel cup. The EExpure foam felt firm and responsive underfoot. Lastly, the Vibram sole allowed me to handle whatever the trail presented me from muddy roots and twisty single tracks to steep climbs and descents.

Norda’s 002 is one of my two favourite trail runners of all time. My other favourite is Norda’s 001. 002 is incredibly comfortable and lightweight, designed for racing and high-intensity efforts. I’ve ran more than 1,000km on one pair without any signs of wear. They feature a shorter stack height than the 001, a Vibram midsole and outsole, and a Bio-Dyneema upper, which is incredibly strong and resilient to abrasion from tough trails and elements, whether root, rock, mud, sand, snow, or other.

Straight out of the box these are one nice looking shoe. I’m tempted to get a second pair just to wear around (and keep clean). Finally, fashion meets function!

The makers have done their homework combining a cutting edge durable seamless upper with wrap around high vis reflective, a functional soleplate and lightweight cushioning. The 001 is unfortunately not waterproof and runs small so plan on a 1/2 size up.

This is a great shoe for athletes who run a mix of road and trail. It promises soft cushioning, reliable traction, and impressive durability. I had no problems with slippage on wet surfaces, even in Vancouver where there is an endless supply of that! The shoe performs best on flat, packed gravel trails. My biggest complaint is that I would have liked more padding around the ankle collar—it was stiff and not especially soft at first, however, this became a non-issue once I broke in the shoe after a few days. Overall, the FloatZig has grown on me-primarily because of how comfortable it is! It fits true to size and has ample room in the toe box.

KEEN
Zionic Waterproof Hiking Shoe

3/5 Stars | Women | $200 | Weight: 11.46 oz | Drop: 14 mm
www.keenfootwear.ca

The Keen Zionic has the expected comfort and quality build of a Keen shoe, especially if you need a roomy forefoot. I would classify this shoe as a fast hiker though, as it doesn’t have the fit or responsive build of a true trail runner. Great for wet days on the trail when you want to move quickly and with assurance over a variety of terrain, but too stiff and heel heavy for fast trail running.

These low tops are super comfortable. The brand refers to them as shoes with “cloud-like cushion”, and I have to agree! The outsole provides nice traction for hiking and so far, the upper has kept my feet dry in wet conditions, which is one of Vessi’s features. I personally love a bright white shoe, but I’m not sure they’ll ever be truly white again after some time on the trails! Fit is true to size.

Fully waterproof and featuring generous cushioning, the ride is firm but forgiving enough to be worn all-day long in a variety of situations. Light and responsive on easy to moderate hikes and great for walking around town, this shoe doubles up as a smart and casual sneaker if you want to head straight from the trail to the restaurant without changing your footwear.

This shoe offers amazing support and stability that can handle multiple mid-week training runs and daily training with ease. The shoe is built with a well-constructed and stable upper that provides a secure and comfortable fit. The new Dreamstrike PEBA Foam cushions your feet from the road while providing an incredibly responsive feel. The outsole provides just the right amount of grip and road feel while keeping the shoe feeling light and responsive. An everyday shoe that can handle all your miles with ease.

Experience Flow

5/5 Stars | Women | 7.2 oz | 4 mm Drop | $180
www.altrarunning.com

The Altra Experience Flow shoe is their first non-zero drop shoe at 4mm. The roomy toe box remains true to Altra’s spacious and comfortable design, but now offers a compression-molded midsole with rocker shape. The cushioning was light offering solid impact absorption without sacrificing responsiveness. The shoe’s lightweight construction and breathable upper kept my feet cool. Overall, Altra delivers an enjoyable experience at speedier paces and can help you ease into future zero drop shoe.

ALTRA
Experience Flow

Novablast 4

4/5 Stars | Women | 7.7 oz | 8 mm Drop | $180
www.asics.com/ca

It’s not the bounciest shoe I’ve tried, but it’s close. The oversized base provides a stable landing, which is a good thing considering its stack height. The 8 mm drop and aggressive rocker means you’ll roll onto your toes with every step and increase the efficiency of your run. Great for runners new to the pavement. The stretchy upper ensures a comfortable fit out of the box, but to be honest, this is too much shoe for me.

ASICS
Gel Nimbus 26

3.5/5 Stars | men | 10.3 oz | 8 mm Drop | $210
www.asics.com/ca

The Gel Nimbus 26 soft cushioning properties is best suited for runners prone to injuries or the high-mileage runner looking to add a shoe into their weekly rotation with the goal of decreasing impact and wear and tear on their body. ASICS soft cushioning properties without a rocker-outsole, and prioritizing recycled materials, makes this shoe unique. The engineered knit upper provides excellent support and comfort but lacks ventilation which is noticeable on a longer run. Buy this shoe if you are looking for less impact on your body and on the environment.

BROOKS
Glycerin 21

5/5 Stars | Women | 8.8 oz | 10 mm Drop | $200
www.brooksrunning.com

This shoe is a go-to neutral high mileage runner. Up from the Glycerin 20, the 21 has a 2 mm higher stack going from a 26:16 to 28:18 midsole height. The 10 mm drop might be most suited to the heel striker, however it still feels smooth for a more frontwards runner. The nitrogen infused DNA loft v3 material in the midsole provides an incredibly soft landing that transitions easily to take off. The upper is a fine breathable mesh that conforms nicely to the foot without constraint. The heel collar and tongue are well padded adding to the plush feel. The 21’s exceptional cushioning has decent resiliency, feeling as delightful out of the box as 400 km up the road.

This high stack height shoe provides cushioning that is soft on impact loading but quick to bounce back making the overall sensation responsive not mushy. With a 10 mm drop and comfortable lacing system, this foot hugger is made for longer distance runs on the road with ample traction. The shoes feel and look great with a nice firm but comfortable heel cup and is true to size.

Alma Tempo

5/5 Stars | Women | 8.25 oz | 10 mm Drop | $238
www.hettas.ca

This is the first offering for a small shoe company. The shoe has a lower cut heel allowing a welcomed freedom of movement specifically at the tibiotalar joint. The lightweight yet durable upper, engineered with TPU mesh, ensures optimal breathability and 360° structural support. At 235g (size 8.5) the Alma Tempo is surprisingly resilient and durable which would easily handle a season’s worth of mileage. The shoe’s fit is wide enough in the toe box, but not sloppy. Heed the manufacturer’s suggestion of going up a ½ size. Overall, a well-tuned design that delivers exceptional performance and comfort for women who demand the utmost from their running gear.

5/5 Stars | Women | 9.2 oz | 5 mm Drop | $280
www.hoka.com

This is one of my favourite running shoes! When I first saw it, I was impressed by its big stack height and sleek design. Bouncy and responsive the shoe felt great on my feet and had a sweet kick to it. Road running can be tough on my body, but this shoe was springy without feeling off-balance and helped reduce the impact on my joints. I felt more energized and comfortable throughout my entire run. Overall, I highly recommend the HOKA Skyward X shoe to any runner who wants a comfortable, durable, and high-performance shoe.

The newest shoes from HOKA have BOUNCE. Their soles feature a thick dual layered combo of PEBA and EVA foam which provides max cushioning. Typically, the plushness comes at the cost of feeling heavy and slow. HOKA solved this by adding a carbon plate which I instantly felt the extra energy return in each stride. Initially I had issues with my heel lifting out of the shoe, but that was quickly solved with using the second eyelet and tying in the heel lock. This is now my go to shoe for long runs.

3.5/5 Stars | Women | 7.2 oz | 1 mm Drop | $210
can.mizuno.com

I really enjoyed the ride of the Flash 2! It is a light, bouncy, and responsive nylon-plated trainer ideal for workouts and daily runs when you want to fly. The rocker is quite noticeable and encourages forward momentum, which makes this shoe a great option for midfoot and forefoot strikers. The only downside for me is the tapered toe box and overall narrow design, so those with wider feet like myself will have a tough time with the fit.

The shape of speed is changing with Mizuno’s latest take on a super shoe, which features a cut away heel and unique midsole geometry. The rocker and bouncy foam works best when you land on your midfoot or forefoot, so this light and zippy racer – also suitable for tempos and speed workouts – is not recommended for aggressive heel-strikers. When you land in the right spot, the carbon-reinforced plate propels you forward with a ride that feels snappy and fast.

I have raced in a variety of super shoes, but this one is a frontrunner when it comes to 10 km and half-marathon road racing. With every step you are propelled forward and feel like you might actually fly. The FuelCell’s thin carbon fibre plate and 100 per cent PEBA foam midsole offers energy return to the legs to keep you feeling fresh even when the going gets tough. The shoe is true to fit, narrow through the midsole with lots of room in the toe box. I highly recommend the shoe as a bouncy, comfortable option for longer distance road races.

The new NB 1080s are incredibly soft and cushioned throughout the midsole. Unlike criticisms of past versions, this iteration fits true to size, and they feel comfortable in all phases of striding. I wore these on easy runs and found them to be ample for the work. I would happily reach for these for long work on the road any day. These will be a staple in my road running repertoire this season.

The Newton Gravity 13 is a sustainably constructed lightweight road shoe. The breathable, sock-like upper is constructed using 100 per cent recycled materials. This is a neutral trainer with a light and responsive ride that provides a natural feel while running. The lower heel to toe drop took time to adjust to, but the full-foot cushioning felt responsive and fast.

A lightweight, responsive, up-tempo shoe is great for mid-foot strikers. Newton’s unique mid-foot lugs promote efficient running but do take a period of adjustment. The upper fit is excellent and accommodating due to its wide toe box and open throat tongue and lacing. Newton’s new mid-sole foam and XPS plate result in a cushioned yet snappy feel to the shoe. This shoe is worth a try if you’re looking for something different to spice up your run life.

The Infinity FK4 is a shoe that excels for recovery and easy runs. It is well cushioned and comfortable. Relative to its predecessors it is more durable yet with softer foam and is also heavier. I found the shoe to have good take-off in striding and had noticeable midfoot support. Given its weight, I wouldn’t take to it for workouts or races. However, its comfortable ride makes it a perfect selection for easy running. It looks super sharp, too!

This fourth version of the shoe is significantly different from its predecessors. Key improvements include a denser foam sole achieved through compression molding, enhancing durability but also adding weight and reducing reactivity. Another major upgrade is the higher quality fly knit upper, crafted from a comfortable but thicker material, also resulting in a slightly heavier shoe. While these upgrades will increase the shoe’s lifespan, it’s best suited for shorter or recovery runs rather than long-distances or races.

The cloud technology allows you to put in the miles without punishing your legs. It feels stable underfoot, cushiony without feeling soft and spongy, yet still responsive. The shoe runs a bit longer and a bit wider than previous versions, so buy yourself a half size smaller.

This show is an excellent runner for those who like a good amount of cushioning and a forward rolling feel in their road shoes. The foot strike feels cushioned yet firm, the heel lock is incredibly solid, and the upper is very breathable, making for an overall pleasant running experience. The downside is that the tongue is incredibly thin which can cause pressure on the top of your arch if you cinch the laces tightly.

The Puma ForeverRun Nitro is a great shoe for endurance runs in the city, where the extra cushioning protects against hard surfaces. I really like the way the cushioning feels responsive without being squishy. This shoe feels supportive and protective without restricting natural run stride. The outsole has surprisingly good grip for a road shoe, making it a natural choice whether wet or dry out. The Nitro may run a bit narrow for some people, but overall, this is an excellence cushioned trainer.

This neutral shoe is both well-cushioned and responsive when running at faster speeds.  I could see myself using them as a regular trainer for tempo runs when preparing for races 10 km and longer. The collar around the ankle and back of the heel comes up quite high, so you’ll need to wear them with taller socks to avoid blisters. They fit true to size and have a moderate width toe-box.

Bring on the pavement! Saucony has outdone themselves with superb cushioning and comfort in the Guide. As a stability shoe I could feel the added support under my medial arch, however it doesn’t weigh the shoe down. The design of the shoe is great. My initial reaction to slipping on a pair of Saucony Guide 17’s was “great fit.” The excellent heel lock-in, supportive comfort of the “FORMFIT” insole and broad platform of the shoe gave me a feeling of stability and confidence which transferred to my running. On the road the shoe performed very well. This was my first opportunity to run in the Topo Phantom 3. Marketed as a high cushioned trainer, I found it to be more of a moderately cushioned shoe that felt quite firm against the road. Topo’s Zipfoam felt firm and stable, but not super soft or bouncy. The toe box was appropriately roomy allowing my foot to plant as it should. The upper felt light and the tongue and lace system hugged my foot with no pressure points or hot spots. The heel cup fit well with no slippage. The 5 mm drop and neutral design of the shoe would be suited well for easy to moderate miles.

This is a unique shoe. It’s engineered from socks and has a seamless, comfortable and breathable upper. The toe box is a nice width, the lacing system is great, and the shoe is very stable. The midsole is quite rigid which should give more energy return, however it felt too rigid and stiff for my foot. The shoe looks bulky but the weight was fine overall.  I like the concept of the shoe as it’s aiming to be more environmentally friendly. It will work for those seeking more stability as it keeps the foot in a more neutral position.

This was my first time running in a pair of UYN shoes. The Synapsis felt relatively quick once it was on my feet, despite having a higher overall stack height than I normally opt for. The midsole felt lively and responsive, but the shoe overall felt somewhat rigid for my preference. After a little struggle getting it on my foot, the sock-like upper and heel counter held my foot nicely. The materials used did feel like they could use some streamlining and refinement, but overall this shoe is worth consideration for those looking for a stable daily trainer.

The heel-lock lacing paired with ASICS tongue wing construction contribute to a very secure feeling through the upper. Pair that with a fairly roomy toe box and you’ve got a trail runner’s dream.

Many years ago my trail running adventures started in the first generation of Cascadia, and my love affair with trails continues as I hit the mountains in the Cascadia 17. The sticky rubber sole offers superb traction along the dry BC trails, and for extra bonus points it’s made of 25 per cent recycled materials. The roomy toe box and soft cushioning are guaranteed to keep your feet happy so that you keep moving comfortably across the terrain of your choice. The best trail shoe I have had in a long time.

This shoe is a blast! Comfortable out of the box and on an epic first run handled variations in conditions like a champ. From pebbles, through puddles, over roots, and deep into jagged rocks there was nothing this shoe didn’t handle well. The outsole is flexible and affords grip on all manner of trail. Its “integrated sandwich midsole” provides cushion and comfort over the span of moderate to hostile terrain. The upper is light, breathable and water repellant held together with a comfortable lacing system.

This shoe’s outsole has a uniquely wide base, so it’s very stable. Dry, loose dirt trails are a piece of cake even on the steep ups and downs. Lots of cushion without being too heavy. Ideal for longer more rugged terrain. Lacing system and toe box are perfect. Super secure and comfortable for a narrow, high arched foot and looks versatile for other foot shapes. A great all season trail shoe with just enough mesh in the upper and a bit of waterproof in the lower outsole.

A super-sized maximum cushioning trail shoe. It features a large Techlite PLUSH sole that has a 36 mm ride height at the heel and foam that forms four bubble-like sections on both sides to give an unusual but very supportive ride. The wide midsole offers plenty of stability, while the lugs will help you navigate even the most demanding terrain during long runs on the trails.

http://www.hoka.com

I normally find HOKA shoes too cushioned, but this is their paired back version, better suited for shorter outings, and I’ve instantly fallen in love. They are super light with just enough cushion to absorb the pounding without losing the feeling of contact with the ground. The toe box is snug but comfortable. The wide Vibram sole makes for a stable landing with every foot strike. These would be the perfect shoe for those who want to run fast at shorter, mid-technical trail races, and I’ll be lacing them up for my next 50 miler.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the original HOKA Zinal but the latest iteration is a big upgrade that will bring a smile to your face! I would rate this as a speedy, lively and lightweight sub-ultra racer. The entire upper is redesigned with a built-in knitted cuff to keep rocks out. The midsole is lively and offers just enough cushion for fast rips on rocky trail; the Vibram outer is perfect for technical descents and scrambles. This is definitely a more minimalist HOKA, but it’s one that even hardcore maximalists will appreciate! Recommended for technical fast runs and workouts!

Ample cushioning provides supreme comfort on long runs and fastpacking trips. I also loved how the integrated GORE-TEX gaiter kept my feet dry in the morning dew. Unfortunately, these shoes have poor ground feel so I felt clumsy running on technical terrain. The gaiter is very durable and the tread provides excellent grip.  The foam on the midsole got chewed up on rocky terrain, but this did not affect shoe performance.

What I most liked about this shoe is its versatility. As an urban trail runner there are always roads to navigate and the shoe felt lightweight and flexible but when I got to the trail it felt stable and robust. While I did not get to test it this way, I know the shoe is going to be great in the snow; it gave me the stability I need when I ran through sand. What really stands out for me is Mizuno’s commitment to sustainability, using eco-friendly recycled materials.

I have been searching for new trail shoes for quite a while. Trying these Mizuno trail shoes they had a great feel on the multi-surfaces that trail running demands. Sand, mud, dirt and gravel? They gave excellent and intimate surface contact through them all. The outsole is a near perfect balance of mildly aggressive lugs that provide terrific traction without collecting mud or leaving you feeling disconnected from the trail. I loved the last/form of this shoe. I felt supported and in proper running position uphill, downhill and on any cross slopes of single track. This is an all-around great shoe.

This is norda’s more cushioned shoe which takes everything that I wished running shoe brands would do with a shoe and actually does them. The heel cup is deeper, the tongue is fixed in place, and there are no seams that could potentially cause blisters. I loved the fit of this shoe immediately; I laced them up once and never had to re-tie them. The cushioning is responsive on technical trails and rides smooth on the roads. The Vibram Litebase sole on the Norda 001 is flexible, aids in the cushioning and is incredibly grippy. I loved the feel of the shoe at an easy pace over all terrain for hours on end. A responsive and lightweight trail shoe that is a lovely compliment to norda’s lineup. The upper is a seamless material called Dyneema which fits beautifully. The 002 feels speedy on trails but lacks the cushioning to be enjoyable on the roads. This is not a knock against the 002 as it would lose some of its trail magic if they catered it to be comfortable on asphalt. The shoe fits the bill splendidly for wet, cool, and non-technical terrain. The GORE-TEX upper feels surprisingly light, pliable, and breathable for the great protection it offers. The ‘gaiterish’ ankle collar and nicely padded wide tongue give a sock-like feel contouring the foot and providing excellent coverage preventing debris from entering the shoe. Dual pull tabs are especially useful with these softer upper elements. The midsole is responsive, yet soft enough to dampen the load from firmer ground. A heel-striking runner that doesn’t veer too far off trail will appreciate the reliability and traditional road feel of yet another very impressive iteration of the Pegasus.

Likely the softest most cushioned trail shoe currently on the market, it’s hard not to love and appreciate the plush underfoot feel of this shoe as much at the end of a long run as in the first mile. The rigidity of a full length carbon Flyplate is hardly noticeable given the encapsulation by the exceptionally comfortable and forgiving Zoom X midsole. With shallow lugs and a narrowed midfoot, this shoe rolls beautifully on gravel and other smooth trails. A wide forefoot, a Vibram including side walled outsole, and light but highly effective overlays, all contribute to a stable and secure ride allowing one to push the pace without hesitation. Similar to the game changing Vapourfly on the road, this shoe sets a trailblazing precedence.

If you are like me and a lot of trail runners are, you often try to get away with wearing your road shoes on the trails. The comfort and lightweight feel of a road shoe is enticing. This shoe feels very much like a road shoe with a rugged outsole. I really appreciated how light and responsive it was particularly on the uphills and more technical terrain. The outsole provided plenty of traction and the combination of the carbon plate and foam gave a fast thrill ride feeling to my run. The toe box was a little too roomy for me as I like a narrow fit but that is a preference not a criticism. Overall an excellent shoe.

This is an exquisite example of a true mountain and trail running shoe. The midsole is light, well cushioned, and offers some rebound for extra comfort and efficiency on technical terrain. The grip of the Tomir can tackle any surface from dirt trails to steep, rocky surfaces. The fit is snug around the midfoot but the toe box is roomy. My only complaint was I did find the tongue to be on the longer side, but it’s not abrasive or irritating. Overall, I feel the Tomir is an optimal choice for outdoor adventures and it deserves the title of all-rounder trail running shoe!

2023 Road Running Shoe Review https://impactmagazine.ca/gear/2023-road-running-shoe-review/ Thu, 27 Apr 2023 15:53:08 +0000 https://impactmagazine.ca/?p=53858 We’ve teamed up once again with our top runners from across Canada who tested the best road-running shoes to help you make your selections this year. Let’s face it, running always begins with a great pair of running shoes. Have a scroll through the pages for some of the upgraded classics, and new technology that will help you find inspiration for the sole.

What’s the ‘Drop’ You Say?
This is the difference between the heel and the forefoot measurements, or in other words, how much your toes ‘drop’ below your heel. Why is this important? Because a higher drop can lead to more heel striking and also transfers some strain away from the lower leg and up towards the knee. A lower drop will shift the load further down to your calf. Check with an expert, choose what feels comfortable to you and take into account your running mechanics and history of injuries.

I almost always run a combination of road and trail, so it was nice to have a shoe that was good on both types of terrain. While I can’t wear zero drop very often due to Achilles issues, it was nice to run in Altras again, which are great for people with toe-joint issues who need extra space in the toe box. They were somewhat stiff to start but relaxed as the run went on, and felt light and responsive.

These have all the features you’ve come to expect from Altra: a roomy toe box, zero drop heel-to-toe offset, and an appropriate amount of cushion for longer runs. The shape of the maximalist sole has a more aggressive rocker, which may help with promoting a proper toe-off on each stride. The shape of the rocker encourages proper mechanics from heel-strike to toe-off but less comfortable when I started running with more of my typical mid-foot strike.

I barely recognized this 25th edition of the Nimbus. I immediately noticed the knit tongue and heel tab and how well the shoe hugged my foot. The upper is not nearly as overbuilt as earlier versions of this model, which adds to the lightness of the shoe. I was impressed with its cushioned, plushy ride. The toe box fits on the narrow side so consider going up half a size. This is a great everyday trainer for easy mileage and recovery runs.

Asics has redesigned the Nimbus 25 to appeal to male and female moderate- to high-mileage, neutral runners. Asics removed the forefoot gel but created a larger pureGEL pad in the heel-strike area. This change with the ultra-soft Flight Foam Blast Plus provides a soft touch down and gentle forward rock. The knitted stretchy tongue and perfectly padded heel cup provides a super comfortable but secure upper. I love this shoe for track session, tempo efforts and long slow-paced runs.

These shoes literally rock! The ‘rapid roll’ rockered sole promotes a swift and smooth transition, impact to toe-off. This neutral trainer aptly delivers performance on peppy outings. The nitrogen-infused midsole provides a lightweight and soft cushion underfoot, without excessive compression to lose road feel. An upper that allows a snug fit, a cleverly flared sole, and a grippy outsole all instill confidence in a secure ride. A smart choice for a runner that logs many zippy miles.

This shoe is light and responsive and can be used for training or racing. It is a good choice for “neutral” runners. It offers speedy heel-to-toe transitions and has plenty of ultralight DNA Flash cushioning to help absorb impact, even through the midsole. I found the fit to be extremely comfortable due to the stretch-woven upper and 3D fit print. The shoe provided a snappy, speedy feel for workouts and the rubber outsole provided decent traction. This is a great new addition to the Brooks line-up of shoes.

HOKA
CLIFTON 9

4/5 Stars | Women | 7.3 oz | 5 mm Drop | $180
www.hoka.com

When I first stepped into these shoes, I immediately noticed the stack height, but quickly adapted as I was cruising in ultimate comfort. The fit is well-designed with a snug heel and roomy toe box. The heel pull tab is quite significant but doesn’t detract from the shoe. My only issue was chafing caused by the top eyelet, easily resolved by lacing down a level. The lightweight cushioning is great for easy runs. They’re not the most responsive for faster-paced runs, but they hit the mark for comfort.

HOKA
CLIFTON 9

4.5/5 Stars | Men | 8.7 oz | 5 mm Drop | $180
www.hoka.com

The Clifton 9 is a maximalist daily runner equipped with HOKA’s Meta-Rocker midsole. It provides thick cushioning with an energy-saving design. I found it fits narrow but was quite comfortable and was a great runner for long-distance daily miles. This is a great shoe for easy-paced running or getting in some extra miles following higher-intensity workouts or a large-volume week. The Clifton 9 has both a softer and thicker foam midsole than previous iterations.

Mizuno
Wave Rider 26 Roxy Edition

4/5 Stars | Women | 8.3 oz | 12 mm Drop | $180
www.mizunousa.com

A traditional, reliable and neutral daily running shoe. The Mizuno Enerzy foam midsole felt plush and stable. The recycled upper gave a nice locked-down feel and felt comfortable and supportive. A workhorse daily trainer that’s durable and cushioned, I would recommend this shoe for someone who is looking for a moderately cushioned and responsive neutral daily trainer.

Wave Rider 26

4/5 Stars | Men | 10.4 oz | 12 mm Drop | $180
www.mizunousa.com

The Mizuno Wave Runner 26 is light, responsive and ready to run right out of the box and built solid bottom to top. The durable X10 outsole sets the stage gripping treadmill, track and road equally well. The Enerzy foam and the higher heel drop makes this a comfortable shoe for heel-striking runners and controlled downhill running. This neutral shoe has a built-in wave plate, a tight heel box and a wider toe box wrapped up in a breathable and light upper throw. It’s solidly my long-run shoe this season.

New Balance
FuelCell SuperComp Elite V3

3.5/5 Stars | Women | 6.3 oz | 4 mm Drop | $299.99
www.newbalance.ca

These shoes had a nice feel out of the box. They’re lightweight and bouncy, and the sock-fit upper supports well. Because of the foam sole in combination with the carbon fibre plate, they’re super fast with great energy return. The internal lacing stitches protrude and can cause some rubbing. If you have high arches, the integrated tongue design could make them feel a bit too snug around the top of the foot. They’re also on the narrower side, so not the best for wide feet (like mine!).

JULIE HAMULECKI, Toronto, ON – Coached by her husband Adam Takacs. She runs on the national 100 km team and currently holds the Canadian Women’s 100 km road record.

New Balance
FuelCell SuperComp Elite V3

4.5/5 Stars | Men | 8.1 oz | 4 mm Drop | $299.99
www.newbalance.ca

I was excited to try New Balance’s latest carbon-plated high-end racer. I have put in a few miles in the prior iteration and this is definitely an upgrade. The midsole foam material is firmer, with a lively and bouncy feel. The shoe is stable when cornering and feels fast and responsive, without losing any comfort. With a less aggressive rocker than many super shoes, one might expect the forward propulsion and snap to be lacking, but that isn’t the case. Highly recommended.

Newton
Gravity 12

3/5 Stars | Women | 7.2 oz | 3 mm Drop | US $185
https://www.newtonrunning.com

The Newton Gravity 12 supports a nice stride, and being a midfoot/forefoot striker, I really felt a boost, and found the shoe extremely versatile. It will handle my training well, including easy days or tempo runs. The shoe fits true to size, and while it is on the firmer side, the design is responsive without sacrificing comfort. The Gravity 12 is great option for runners looking for a shoe that delivers on performance and fit.

Gravity 12

4/5 Stars | Men | 8.6 oz | 3 mm Drop | US $185
https://www.newtonrunning.com

The Newton Gravity 12 is a lightweight shoe with a roomy toe box and very comfortable, flexible upper. The forefoot lugs give you a propulsive feeling on push off but may feel too firm if you run on your toes. The ride feels like a zero-drop shoe and may require a period of transition. If you love the feeling of the forefoot lugs, it is a great shoe for workouts and interval training.

5/5 Stars | Women | 9.0 oz | 9 mm Drop | $235
www.nike.com

It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited to try a new shoe. It practically bounced out of the box. At first glance the sole looks beefy, but once on the shoe’s max cushioning offered a soft springy landing with each step. The midfoot is narrower compared to Nike’s Pegasus and feels secure in all the right places while the toe box is roomy. After training in the Pegasus for years, the Invincible 3 might just be my new go-to trainer.

This shoe is a blast to run in. I couldn’t wait to get out the door after putting these on my feet. The ZoomX foam provides crazy amounts of cushioning without feeling bulky. The springy ride of this shoe may take some getting used to depending on what you are familiar with. I got used to it fairly quickly and wouldn’t hesitate to use this shoe as my daily road trainer.

Every time I put on an On running shoe, I am impressed by the fit, look, and the obvious durability before I even take a step. These shoes are comfortable, breathable, and light, yet offer great support and durability. Their CloudTec foam pods are super responsive, and the toe bed is plenty wide but still hugs the foot to prevent any movement. I am looking forward to spending more time in the Cloudmonsters, my favourite On shoe yet!

The GO RUN Razor 4 is a lighter-weight training road shoe with a soft ride. The toe box is narrow which may suggest going up half a size for some with wider feet. The insole provides decent support in the medial arch. Considered a performance trainer featuring a carbon-infused plate, this shoe will perform well for some quicker workouts as well as some daily runs. Overall, a decent shoe for training and potentially some races.

A super lightweight and cushy road shoe that wraps around my narrow, high-arched foot well with the superior lacing system. There’s a perfect amount of flexibility and stability in the sole, which adds more comfort. The Ultrafly 4 has a wide toe box, and they fit true to size. I wore these in a 12 km road race and was very happy with the performance. The full-length ZipFoam cushioning reduced the impact of racing while my feet still felt light and quick! This is my go-to road shoe right now.

This is a super light, fast-feeling shoe that could be used for all runs. This shoe is stable enough to use every day, but cushioned enough that once it’s broken in, it will be your go-to shoe for recovery runs and your long runs. The big rocker helps to keep you on your toes and assists in a fast turnover. The single-layer upper provides great breathability and flexibility in the forefoot, and the tighter weave in the midfoot and back of the shoe allows for a secure fit without feeling heavy.

Comfy, stylish and versatile. One of the goals of a minimalist foot-shaped shoe is to allow the small muscles in your feet to activate better to contribute to stability and strength. Transitioning from more of a traditional, supportive shoe to Vivos has been surprisingly easy for me. As a casual runner, this has been a slower transition in order to get my body used to a new way of working. They are worth the price as they are also good for walking, strength training and hiking.

2022 TRAIL RUNNING SHOE REVIEW https://impactmagazine.ca/features/2022-trail-running-shoe-review/ Mon, 03 Oct 2022 18:50:49 +0000 https://impactmagazine.ca/?p=50374 Looking for new trail running shoes? Once again we’ve asked some of the best runners from across Canada who live and breathe running to cover miles of trails for us. Whether you run local trails in the park or rugged mountain terrain, you will be prepared for the most epic trail experience possible with the right trail shoes.

Consider the ‘Drop’
This is the difference between the heel and the forefoot measurements, or in other words, how much your toes ‘drop’ below your heel. Why is this important? Because a higher drop can lead to more heel striking and also transfers some strain away from the lower leg and up towards the knee. A lower drop will shift the load further down to your calf. Check with an expert, choose what feels comfortable to you and take into account your running mechanics and history of injuries.

adidas
TERREX Agravic Flow 2

5/5 Stars | Men | 10.5 oz | 8 mm Drop | $180
www.adidas.ca

The Agravic Flow 2 is a surprising combination of light and sturdy while paying attention to the planet you are bounding over. You can pat yourself on the back for cruising in a shoe made with recycled materials, whose upper features at least 50 per cent recycled content. It handles sharp exposed ridges, fast steep turns, root ripping and forest bounding with equal ease. The mesh upper is supportive and breathable so that you’ll always have a comfortable, cool, dry foot strike. Sturdy enough to put in piles of miles, this is my favourite this season.

TERREX Agravic Flow 2

4.5/5 Stars | Women | 10.58 oz | 8 mm Drop | $180
www.adidas.ca

I was skeptical of this shoe at first because it is stiff and hefty with a high, rigid heel collar. However, I tested it while orienteering off-trail, and it felt fantastic on the lumpy, uneven ground. I was confident with each foot landing and felt stable as I ran. The toe box was particularly roomy, and I liked the 8 mm drop. While I won’t lace these up for any racing, they will be my go-to training and orienteering shoe. Perfect for those who worry about twisting an ankle on rough terrain.

NICKI REHN, Calgary, AB – ultramarathon runner, orienteer and adventurer who loves to travel the world doing crazy races, disappear deep into the mountains, and rip up the local single-track.

Altra
Outroad

4.5/5 Stars | Men | 10.68 oz | 0 mm Drop | $180
www.altrarunning.com

These new shoes from Altra offer an excellent choice for mellow terrain: something of a balance between trail and road running. The Outroad offer maximal comfort on easy terrain. They were superb underfoot running on gentle trails in the woods of central Alberta. The shoes have generous padding, flexibility and wide midsole alongside Altra’s typical wide toe box. As is Altra’s approach, the Outroad have a 0 mm drop. I thoroughly enjoyed training in the Outroad.

IAN MACNAIRN, Calgary, AB – Trail runner, guy with a PhD in ultrarunning community.

Altra
Outroad

4/5 Stars | Women | 8.8 oz | 0 mm Drop | $180
www.altrarunning.com

These shoes are very comfortable to run in on both road and trail.  The toe box is slightly smaller than other Altra models and the heel is secure. Unfortunately, the soft foam that makes for a comfortable ride does not provide adequate protection on rocky trails. I bruised my heel on more than one occasion. The lugs also do not grip well on clay-based mud, but the grip is much better on loamy soil. I’d recommend these shoes for non-technical dirt trails.

JOANNA FORD, Calgary, AB – Ultramarathon runner with a passion for running long distances in the mountains.

ARC’TERYX
Men’s Norvan LD 3

4/5 Stars | Men | 10 oz | 6 mm Drop | $185
www.arcteryx.com

This long-distance trail shoe is perfect for serious adventures. The Vibram MEGAGRIP works well on all trails and tarmac. They are lightweight and feel great on foot but tend to be a little stiff. The wide toe box serves those longer runs with amazing engineering for durability, but I would likely choose a half size larger. They are stable, have great grip and look great. The lacing system and tongue provided a secure and comfortable fit with no issues on super steep slopes. This is a serious mountain shoe for running and speed hiking.

CAL ZARYSKI, Calgary, AB – Professional active lifestyle coach, 9x World XTERRA Triathlon Champion, 3x Triathlon Canada Coach of the Year, 3x Alberta Triathlon Coach of the Year.

ARC’TERYX
Women’s Norvan LD 3

5/5 Stars | Women | 9 oz | 6 mm Drop | $185
www.adidas.ca

Designed for long distances, Arc’teryx made this shoe comfortable and durable. I loved how breathable and streamlined the CORDURA upper felt. The Norvan LD 3 felt light and plush on descents and ascents. The durable outsole was aggressive with 4 mm Vibram MEGAGRIP lugs and a good bite on rocky and technical terrain. The Norvan LD 3 felt responsive on technical trails and short stints on the road. An excellent trail shoe for technical and urban trails.

ASICS
FUJI LITETM 2

4.5/5 Stars | Men | 9 oz | 4 mm Drop | $150

The Fuji Lite has a new FlyteFoamTM midsole made with recycled materials, providing lightweight shock absorption that propels you forward through the trails. It has exceptional grip with the ASICSGRIPTM outsole and a unique tread pattern. The upper is equipped with a lace garage to keep your laces tucked in. This is a versatile, lightweight shoe designed for a variety of trail surfaces and would be an excellent choice for shorter trail races.

ASICS
FUJISPEED

3.5/5 Stars | Women | 7.3 oz | 4 mm Drop | $150
www.asics.com

Right out of the box this is a stunning, lightweight trail runner. It is built for faster trail runs, with ample cushioning and a focus on the materials and grip remaining light but durable. The laces are comfortable, stay done up, and have a fantastic lace garage on the tongue. I would recommend going up a half size as they run a bit small and are on the narrow side.

RACHAEL MCINTOSH, Calgary, AB – Retired Team Canada Track and Field athlete turned recreational road and trail runner.

BROOKS
Caldera 6

4/5 Stars | Men | 11.3 oz | 6 mm Drop | $190
www.brooksrunning.com

The Brooks Caldera 6 is the latest iteration of the Brooks vision for trail maximalism! This shoe did not disappoint. It looks huge out of the box, but on my feet on a smooth groomed trail, it did not feel at all clumsy, and the ride was springy, with a much nimbler feel than I was expecting. The midsole foam is a winner if you are looking for all-day trail comfort. Despite a less aggressive outsole, I didn’t have any issues with grip. The nice wide toe box will keep your toes comfy. Overall, highly recommended.

ANDY REED, Canmore, AB – Sport medicine physician, mountain ultra-trail runner, numerous podium finishes in mountain ultras through North America.

BROOKS

5/5 Stars | Women | 9.5 oz | 8 mm Drop | $160
www.brooksrunning.com

Put your feet in the Brooks Cascadia 16 for a soft, cushioned and stable run! The shoe has a comfortable fit with room in the toe box and a snug fit around your heel; there’s no need to worry about heel slippage. The lightweight feature of the new DNA LOFT v2 midsole makes hitting the trails light and bouncy. The grooves on the midsole provide enough traction to feel confident on any terrain with roots, hills, gravel or dirt. This is the ideal shoe for comfort, durability and traction!

COLUMBIA
Men’s Escape™ Thrive Endure™

4/5 Stars | Men | 15 oz | 8 mm Drop | $210
www.columbiasportswear.ca

The Columbia Escape Thrive Endure is a hiking boot for foul weather. I typically opt for a running shoe, but this boot felt comfortable when I first put it on. For those who prefer to hike in boots but prefer a more athletic look, this hybrid option has a sportier look and offers a comfortable, stable ride. It felt quite grippy on loose dirt and rock and the membrane should keep your foot dry while splashing through puddles. It would be a good hiking boot to cover more distance and is more than a standard trail running shoe.

ADAM CAMPBELL, Squamish, B.C. – Lawyer, endurance athlete, happy in the mountains on foot, bike, rocks and skis.

COLUMBIA
Women’s Escape™ Thrive Endure™

4/5 Stars | Women | 15 oz | 8 mm Drop | $210
www.columbiasportswear.ca

This is an ultra-cushioned trail shoe with great traction and a comfortable waterproof upper. I was impressed with the overall mobility and ‘running shoe’ feel considering the ankle-hugging height of the shoe, and while I would not choose it for a trail race, it’s a great shoe for someone who wants cushioning and something lightweight to play around all day in trails or any sort of rough terrain.

LUCY SMITH, Victoria, B.C. – Elite athlete in distance running, duathlon and triathlon for more than 30 years, coach and motivational speaker.

HOKA’S Slogan, “Time to Fly” describes this trail shoe accurately. These modern carbon-plated endurance trail shoes have all the best features for any trail runner. The shoes are stable and lightweight with great cushioning. The fit is true to size. The soles are great for a hard-packed trail. The lacing system and super lightweight tongue creates a comfortable and secure fit. I had no issues with heel slip or hot spots after several longer trail runs. This shoe is ideal for a wide forefoot and both road and a variety of trails. It’s the perfect all-rounder shoe!

5/5 Stars | Women | 6.9 oz | 5 mm Drop | $240

These might be my new favourite trail shoes! They’re nice and light, but the treads take me everywhere I want to go.  I’ve used them on all of the Invermere trails and the rockier Canmore ones. Lots of room in the toe box, they keep my heels nice and snug, and they keep all the fine dust out. I was surprised at how supportive they were without being too heavy or clunky or restrictive.

AMY PUZEY, Invermere, B.C. – 2x Team Canada member at the World Mountain Running championships, mother of six.

MIZUNO
Wave Rider TT

4/5 Stars | Men | 10.1 oz | 12 mm Drop | $175
www.mizunousa.com

The Mizuno Wave Rider TT is a great shoe for anyone who is looking for a lightweight, well-cushioned shoe. The shoe handled well on groomed trails and cross-country terrain and gave a lot of comfort over those conditions. I will be looking at using these shoes for light trail runs up to 21-kilometre routes. I would recommend sticking to less technical trails as I did not find them supportive and stiff enough for mountain trails or overly rocky and rooted trails. Overall, a great shoe for a mix of light to moderate trails and roads.

PHIL HIOM, Kamloops, B.C. – Runner who spends most of his time training on the trails around Kamloops, training for 100 km Lost Soles Ultra in Lethbridge, AB, hoping to qualify for the Western States Endurance Run Lottery.

MIZUNO
Wave Rider TT

4/5 Stars | Women | 8.3 oz | 12 mm Drop | $175
www.mizunousa.com

The Wave Rider TT (Total Terrain) is meant for varied surface running. Like most Mizuno shoes, they fit slightly smaller than true to size. The toe box is more narrow than other brands, which will appeal to some runners. This shoe performed well on mixed terrain including crushed gravel and some more technical terrain. The shoe itself is a great weight for all types of terrain. This versatile shoe has a responsive ride and a breathable upper, but I definitely recommended it for a narrower fit foot.

CATRIN JONES, Victoria, B.C. – 50-km, 50-mile and 6-hour Canadian record holder.

NEW BALANCE
Fresh Foam X 880v12

3.5/5 Stars | Men | 10.5 oz | 10 mm Drop | $179.99
www.newbalance.ca

The New Balance 880 v12 was the perfect fit! The knitted upper was extremely comfortable for my wider foot. My heel felt locked in right away and the tongue and laces disperse the pressure across the top of the foot evenly. The sole is a two-part foam consisting of Fresh Foam X for softness and FuelCell for responsiveness; this combination is the perfect match. The thick rubber on the outsole provides great protection on gravel trails and asphalt. If you are a wider-foot runner who is looking for your next everyday trainer, this is it.

LOGAN ROOTS, Courtenay, B.C. – Road, trail, and mountain running enthusiast who enjoys crushing big mileage, ego-altering workouts and running just fast enough to qualify for elite entry.

NEW BALANCE
Fresh Foam X 880v12

5/5 Stars | Women | 8.4 oz | 10 mm Drop | $179.99
www.newbalance.ca

From the first step out the door, the 880 felt fast and springy. It felt like I had been training in it for years. The Fresh Foam midsole was a pleasure to run on, feeling plush but responsive. The slightly higher volume fit would accommodate an orthotic nicely but held onto my foot with the stock insole as well. If you are looking for a neutral, everyday training shoe with cushion and comfort, the New Balance 880 might just be your new favourite.

3.5/5 Stars | Men | 9.9 oz | 6 mm Drop | $180
www.nike.com

Disappointing to see this shoe gaining weight with each iteration. As Nike’s trail racer, the Kiger feels overbuilt and unable to react to quick changes in terrain. The midsole provides plenty of protection but lacks ground feel. On the plus side, the new upper breathes well and locks the foot in nicely.

ANDREW RUSSELL, Saanichton, B.C. – 2019 Vancouver Island Race Series champion, 2019 Finlayson Arm 28K champion and course record holder.

NIKE
Air Zoom Terra Kiger 8

4/5 Stars | Women | 9.1 oz | 6 mm Drop | $180
www.nike.com

A light and nimble shoe for urban and rugged trails with multidirectional traction lugs and a dynamic fit system through midfoot. I felt confident running on rocky and uneven descents and ascents. The midfoot React foam provided ample cushion, and I loved how light and breathable the upper was. The shoe really moved with me and provided exceptionally good sensitivity while running on rocky and rough terrain while providing a good amount of cushion. The Kiger comes into its own on urban and rough trails.

EMILY SETLACK, Trenton, ON – Canadian marathoner and mountain runner.

ON
Cloudultra

4/5 Stars | Men | 8.99 oz | 11 mm Drop | $209.99
www.on-running.com

The Cloudultra is a nicely cushioned all-around performer in the trails. The 8mm drop, stable ride and grippy outsole give me confidence in this shoe for long run or ultra race duty. Things felt a little stiff out of the box but loosened up nicely after a couple runs. The unique FlipRelease systems allows subtle width adjustment in the toe-box which could prove useful as feet swell over long distances.

MATTHEW CECIL, Victoria, B.C. – Trail runner and running coach, represented Canada at the Trail World Championships and holds various trail FKTs.

ON
Cloudultra

5/5 Stars | Women | 8.64 oz | 8 mm Drop | $209.99
www.on-running.com

When you want an ultra-cushioned, ultra-comfortable, ultra-versatile trail running shoe, the On Cloudultra is unbeatable. The biggest highlights of this shoe for me were its traction, grip, long-term comfort on ultramarathon trail race days, durability, breathability, and a unique feature called FlipRelease found in the lower lacing, where flipping the plastic switch provides an option for variable lacing width and pressure release at the forefoot. For a sock-like fit no matter a short or long number of kilometres, this is your light and reliable shoe!

MANDY GILL, Vancouver, B.C. – Ultramarathon runner (road & trail), keynote speaker, IMPACT Top Vegan Athlete.

SAUCONY
Endorphin Edge

5/5 Stars | Men | 9 oz | 6 mm Drop | $259.99
www.saucony.com

The long wait for a trail super-shoe may be over. The Endorphin Edge succeeds where other carbon-plated trail racers have failed because it’s as stable as it is snappy. The soft, squishy midsole offers plenty of comfort and protection, but it’s also nimble on rocks or roots and smooth on corners. When you pick up the pace on downhills, it just flies. The Carbitex carbon plate propels you forward like you’ve got a rocket strapped to each heel. It’s like having a Ferrari under your feet with the traction of a four-wheel drive.

KEITH BRADFORD, Calgary, AB – Elite masters runner with a passion for road racing, run coach and crisis communications consultant who has worked with athletes at multiple world cups, world championships and Olympic Games.

SAUCONY
Endorphin Edge

5/5 Stars | Women | 7.8 oz | 6 mm Drop | $259.99
www.saucony.com

If you have a trail race coming up or like to rip it on the trails, the Saucony Endorphin Edge is your shoe. It’s light, fast and race-ready!  Tackle the hills with pop thanks to the carbon fibre plate. The lugs (grip) on the bottom of the shoe are great for the trails but a bit much if you plan on any road running. The upper will keep your feet dry in moderately wet weather and provide a snug fit for average to wider width feet. Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with the shoe and can’t wait to hit the trails!

SABRINA WILKIE, Surrey B.C. – Physiotherapist, mother of three, 2:45 marathoner and winner of the 2016 Victoria Marathon.

TOPO
Mtn Racer 2

5/5 Stars | Men | 10 oz | 5 mm Drop | $220
www.topoathleticcanada.ca

These shoes crush everything from technical mountain runs to blasting through the trails. They hug the heel and midfoot and leave the toes room to breathe without sacrificing any feeling of speed. The Topo Mtn Racer 2 is stable and grips everything from wet rock to sloppy mud. They are compatible with gaiters and expel water quickly after a river crossing. These are my new favourite trail shoes!

LOGAN ROOTS, Courtenay, B.C. – Road, trail, and mountain running enthusiast who enjoys crushing big mileage, ego-altering workouts and running just fast enough to qualify for elite entry.

TOPO
ULTRAVENTURE 2

4.5/5 Stars | Women | 8.3 oz | 5 mm Drop | $210
www.topoathleticcanada.ca

A brand that I didn’t recognize, but one that I will remember. The Topo Ultraventure 2 is the most comfortable trail runner that I have ever worn because of its wide toe box and generous cushioning. This shoe offers a perfect balance of stability and plushness without adding too much bulk or weight. Plus, the lugs provide excellent grip on varied terrain. This shoe even comes with added gator holds! The Ultraventure 2 inspires me to hit the trails and explore!

LISSA ZIMMER, Vancouver, B.C. – An elite marathoner with a 2:42 PB set in 2016 and trail runner with goal of racing a 50-kilometre one day.

VIVOBAREFOOT
Primus Trail II FG

4/5 Stars | Men | 10.3 oz | 0 mm Drop | $288
www.vivobarefoot.com

The greatest attribute of this barefoot trail shoe is its ethical origins. The outer shoe, including a firm ground outsole, is made entirely of recycled plastic waste and is vegan. The shoe is zero-drop and has oversized, 4 mm lugs, which offered good traction on trails both dry and muddy. I found great freedom of movement throughout my whole foot, in part due to the wide toe box and supple upper and outsole.

IAN MACNAIRN, Calgary, AB – Trail runner, guy with a PhD in ultrarunning community.

VIVOBAREFOOT
Primus Trail II FG

5/5 Stars | Women | 8.8 oz | 0 mm Drop | $288
www.vivobarefoot.com

These are my go-to shoes for trail running. Throughout every season in Squamish, I use them for my short or long runs in the forest. The trails here are classic “mixed terrain,” with packed dirt, slippery tree roots, rock gardens, scrambles and lots of mud. Having a shoe to eat up all that usually means a compromise, but the flexible sensation of barefoot combined with extra grip makes the Primus the ideal tool for the job. Best all-rounder trail shoe in my arsenal.

JENNY TOUGH, Scotland – Adventure athlete currently involved in a project to run solo and unsupported across a mountain range on every continent. The first woman to win the Silk Road Mountain Race and Atlas Mountain Race.

VJ SHOES
XTRM 2

4.5/5 Stars | Men | 9.4 oz | 4 mm Drop | $230
www.spryactive.ca

What struck me right out of the box was the aggressive tread. I was keen to try these shoes on a steep, single track and headed out to put these puppies through their paces. I liked the heel support: snug with no rub spots. Up and down the trail there was no slippage inside the shoe, and I was grateful for the wider toe box. These shoes claim that they have the “best grip on the planet”. I can say that I can’t wait to get out again and tackle some new gnarly single tracks.

MARTIN PARNELL, Cochrane, AB – Endurance runner, fundraiser, adventurer and author, six Guinness World Records in endurance events, summited Mount Kilimanjaro in 21 hours.

VJ SHOES
XTRM 2

4/5 Stars | Women | 9.4 oz | 4 mm Drop | $230
www.spryactive.ca

Living on the west coast, the trails are often wet and slick, and this lightweight shoe did not disappoint as it offered excellent traction over slippery trail surfaces. The slipperier, the better for this shoe; it wants to get wet and dirty! The “fitflock” feature secured the midfoot in place while running over uneven ground and gave a snug feel around the instep while offering more room in the toe box. It lives up to its reputation as a shoe that grips, but there is less cushioning and protection against gnarly terrain.

JEN MILLAR, Victoria B.C. – Winner of Times Colonist 10K 2022, National Masters X-Country Champion 2021, mom of two.

XERO
Mesa Trail

5/5 Stars | Men | 15.2 oz | 0 mm Drop | $169.99
www.xeroshoes.com

This ideal minimalist trail shoe is light, lean, and flexible. Be protected yet connected with zero drop, no unnecessary arch support (and a perfect platform if you feel the need to add some), and a wide forefoot area. Delivering a great trail feel, it encourages natural forward motion across all terrain. The mesh upper is durable, breathable and fast-drying. Socks are optional. Remove the insoles to create space and allow more feedback. Run light, smooth, and easy. Great for building a stronger foundation, or for experienced minimalist runners to cover any distance.

RANDY KREILL, Beavercreek, OH – Wellness and truth seeker with 23 official 100-mile ultramarathons complete and roughly 80 total ultramarathons. Celebrating 60 soon with a goal to keep running ultras “injury free.”

XERO
Mesa Trail

4/5 Stars | Women | 12.8 oz | 0 mm Drop | $169.99
www.xeroshoes.com

Disappointing to see this shoe gaining weight with each iteration. As Nike’s trail racer, the Kiger feels overbuilt and unable to react to quick changes in terrain. The midsole provides plenty of protection but lacks ground feel. On the plus side, the new upper breathes well and locks the foot in nicely.

2022 Road Running Shoe Review https://impactmagazine.ca/gear/2022-road-running-shoe-review/ Thu, 19 May 2022 23:31:35 +0000 https://impactmagazine.ca/?p=48012 Once again we’ve gathered some of the best runners from across Canada to review the top brands to help you have the best experience pounding the pavement this year.

They’ve put in hundreds of miles to bring you this in-depth review that has everything you’ll need to find the best shoes for your needs and budget.

Check with an expert, choose what feels comfortable to you and take into account your running mechanics and history of injuries.

adidas
Ultraboost 22

4/5 Stars | Women | 11.7 oz | 10 mm Drop | $250
www.adidas.ca

These shoes are comfortable out of the box because of the stretchy knit upper and max-cushioned sole, but they’re not great for wide feet. After a short run, the narrow toe box left me with sore baby toes, plus the plastic midfoot panel rubbed and caused a blister on the inside of my foot. I also found them quite slow and clunky. If you have narrow feet, I’d recommend for recovery runs or as a lifestyle shoe for everyday wear. Fit is true to size.

JULIE HAMULECKI, Toronto, ON – Ultrarunner coached by husband Adam Takacs, runs on the national 100K team and currently holds the Canadian Women’s 100 km road record.

adidas
Ultraboost 22

3/5 Stars | Men | 10.7 oz | 10 mm Drop | $250
www.adidas.ca

A good looking shoe that will be with you for the long haul. Sitting on a thick bed of Boost foam, the shoe has a soft, yet springy feel, with a good responsive ride despite being one of the heavier shoes I’ve run in in a while. The single piece, knit upper made from recycled materials was incredibly comfortable and it held my foot in place well. A good shoe for easy miles and that you can wear for walking around town.

ADAM CAMPBELL, Squamish, B.C. – Lawyer, endurance athlete happy in the mountains on foot, bike, rock and skis.

Asics
GEL-NIMBUS 24

5/5 Stars | Women | 8.8 oz | 13 mm Drop | $210
www.asics.com

A comfortable shoe with cushioning and support under foot—good for long runs. The upper is soft without seams and very comfortable. The tongue is stretchy and sits perfectly in place without bunching up or moving around. It is light and offers lots of cushion. Great for neutral or under-pronating feet with nice cushioning; no clunky feel and has a nice snappy toe-off. This is a go-to running shoe for longer runs and happier feet!

GRACE HIOM, Kamloops, B.C. – Ultrarunner, trail race host with a passion for health and fitness hoping to run the Western State 100-Mile Endurance Run.

Asics
GEL-NIMBUS 24

3.5/5 Stars | Men | 10.2 oz | 10 mm Drop | $210
www.asics.com

The Gel Nimbus 24 has new FF Blast+ foam in the midsole, which makes it a super soft trainer with a versatile ride. The upper has also improved this year with thin mesh sock-like fit, which also lightens the shoe. This is a great everyday trainer, but I personally felt it was too soft and negatively impacted the stability. If you like a plush, soft, maximal cushy shoe, you’ll love the new version.

BLAINE PENNY, Calgary, AB – Competitive master’s runner with notable accomplishments including 3 x Canadian Ultramarathon Champion, 6 x Guinness World Record holder and winner of the 2015 Wings for Life, North America.

Brooks Running
Ghost 14

4.5/5 Stars | Women | 9 oz | 10 mm Drop | $170
www.brooksrunning.com

This has always been a reliable and comfortable training shoe, and this version did not disappoint, feeling smoother and more comfortable than previous versions. This neutral shoe provides the perfect amount of cushion for longer training runs, but also has great feedback when running and no extra bulk in the shoe. The smooth transition while running was great and the fit around the heel and toe box felt just right. And the bonus; Brooks has produced a shoe using recycled material in the upper.

CATRIN JONES, Victoria, B.C. – 50 km, 50 mile and 6-hour Canadian record holder.

Brooks Running
Launch 9

5/5 Stars | Men | 8.2 oz | 10 mm Drop | $170
www.brooksrunning.com

This is a shoe you want to wear. The Launch 9 is light, responsive, and versatile. It is well ventilated yet provides solid protection from the elements when needed. Brooks has created a shoe with race performance that offers a surprising amount of comfort and support at a reasonable price. Oh yeah and it looks great, which if we are being honest, is super important. Go get it.

NATHAN BODEWITZ, Calgary, AB – Founder and head strength coach at Peak Fitness YYC. He is an OCR athlete, all around mountain guy, and proud dad.

Decathlon
Kiprun Ks 500

3/5 Stars | Women | 8.4 oz | 8 mm Drop | $95
www.decathlon.ca

The KS500 is a neutral entry level running shoe, with a price point that makes it accessible to everyone. This shoe runs narrow with a close fit around the heel and ankle, which would suit someone with narrow feet or who likes a snug feel. The shoe is on the stiffer side, which made for a slightly firm feel when running, and for the price point, this is a basic and well-intentioned shoe to get people up and running.

LUCY SMITH, Victoria, B.C. – Elite athlete in distance running, duathlon and triathlon for over 30 years, coach and motivational speaker.

Decathlon
Kiprun Ks 500

4.5/5 Stars | Men | 9.9 oz | 8 mm Drop | $95
www.decathlon.ca

Putting on the Kiprun KS500’s I knew I was ready for the road. The fit is excellent with solid ankle support. A wide toe box eliminated any pinch point and during the sessions there were no hot spots. This is the shoe that will allow you to build your confidence as you train for your next marathon. The promotional material says that they are good for 1000 kilometres which is a huge plus. Stability, grip and comfort are key for me and this shoe has them in spades.

MARTIN PARNELL, Cochrane, AB – Endurance runner, fundraiser, adventurer and author, six Guinness World Records in endurance events, summited Mount Kilimanjaro in 21 hours.

Hoka
KAWANA

4.5/5 Stars | Women | 8.4 oz | 5 mm Drop | $155
www.hoka.com

HOKA offers a smooth ride every time. While these shoes out of the box look ’thicker’ than traditional shoes they do not run like that. They feel smooth and light underfoot. This is a recovery shoe and it’s been helping my legs recover on easier runs between hard efforts. The only reason for the slight decrease in score is the fit. I’m traditionally a 10 but these shoes fit big; I would size down a half to a full size in the future.

SASHA GOLLISH, Toronto, ON – 2015 bronze medallist, Pan Am Games; running roads to the trails and recently breaking World Masters Record in the Indoor Mile – now a Masters World Record holder.

Hoka
KAWANA

4.5/5 Stars | Men | 10 oz | 5 mm Drop | $155
www.hoka.com

The Kawana are incredibly comfortable and look fly. They’re a new design by Hoka, offering a moderate stack height perfect for day-to-day road training. They features HOKA’s unilateral SwallowTail design with a relatively firmer midsole. They are incredibly responsive, with a neutral footfall. The shoes helped me run smoothly and easily into the start of my high-mileage spring base build-up. These will be an excellent choice for racking up miles on the road.

IAN MACNAIRN, Calgary, AB – Trail runner; guy with a doctorate in ultrarunning community.

Mizuno
Wave Inspire 18

4/5 Stars | Women | 9.1 oz | 12 mm Drop | $180
www.mizunousa.com

The Mizuno Wave Rider 18s was a pleasant surprise! They felt a bit tight at first but that only lasted a few minutes. Great cushioning but enough stability and I’ve used them on both road and trail. Lots of room in the toe box, and snug fit for narrow heels. It felt like there could have been a little more cushioning under the toes and forefoot, but that is my only complaint!

AMY PUZEY, Invermere, B.C. – 2 x Team Canada member at the World Mountain Running championships, mother of six.

Mizuno
Wave Inspire 18

4/5 Stars | Men | 10.6 oz | 12 mm Drop | $180
www.mizunousa.com

This cushioned, high drop, moderate stability, daily trainer is one of few available in the market. Full-length ENERZY foam returns a firm responsive ride while an updated seamless upper provides exceptional fit. The double wave-pattern heel plate delivers subtle stability that after one run is unnoticeable. A great shoe for longer runs on tired legs.

ANDREW RUSSELL, Saanichton, B.C. – 2019 Vancouver Island Race Series Champion, 2019 Finlayson Arm 50k Champion and course record holder, 2018 Finlayson Arm 28K Champion and course record holder.

New Balance
Fresh Foam X 1080v12

5/5 Stars | Women | 8.3 oz | 8 mm Drop | $199
www.newbalance.ca

These shoes are like a pillow for your feet! Incredibly comfortable out of the box, the soft Fresh Foam has a nice bounce and slight rocker, so they are still surprisingly responsive. The hyperknit upper is stretchy, and the toe box is roomy, and yet my feet feel hugged in place without any pinching or slippage. These new 1080s are definitely going into frequent rotation for my long easy runs and recovery days.

ARDEN YOUNG, Calgary, AB – Dentist and elite ultrarunner with multiple podium finishes on both the road and trail.

New Balance
Fresh Foam X 1080v12

4.5/5 Stars | Men | 10.3 oz | 8 mm Drop | $199
www.mizunousa.com

These are the perfect shoes for the post-pandemic supply chain blues. The flexible upper made of recycled material and responsive Fresh Foam outsole, provides a plush, cushioned ride right out of the box. The fact that they are made in North America will hopefully mean that they are easier to find in your local retail run shop or online.

JACOB PUZEY, Invermere, B.C. – Winner of the Calgary Marathon 50K Ultra, 4x (consecutive) Canadian Ultramarathon Champion, and run coach with numerous national championship titles.

Newton
Gravity 11

4.5/5 Stars | Women | 7.2 oz | 3 mm Drop | $185
www.newtonrunning.com

This minimal drop shoe fits like a glove with a very flexible upper offering both performance and comfort. The underfoot plate allows for fluid loading to make it a great lightweight training shoe for both workouts and racing. The bonus is it biodegrades 75 per cent faster in a landfill due to its eco-friendly materials.

KAREN HOLLAND, Kimberley, ON – Avid trail runner and ultrarunner who holds the Bruce Trail FKT with her next focus on racing the 2022 Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run.

Newton
Gravity 11

4.5/5 Stars | Men | 8.6 oz | 3 mm Drop | $185
www.newtonrunning.com

The stand-out feature of the Gravity 11 is the sole, which incorporates lugs under the forefoot to provide a bouncy and cushioned stride while maintaining ground feel. This is a lightweight trainer although it is more expensive than other comparable shoes and does not feel as quick. I found it to perform best on tempo or steady runs on the road or smooth gravel trails. The upper fit true to size and was comfortable and breathable.

LOGAN ROOTS, Courtenay, B.C. – Road, trail, and mountain running enthusiast who enjoys crushing big mileage, ego-altering workouts and running just fast enough to qualify for elite entry.

On
Cloudvista

3.5/5 Stars | Women | 9.9 oz | 7 mm Drop | $169
www.on-running.com

The Cloudmonster is a happy medium for easier, longer runs where a balance of cushioning and responsiveness is required. The shoe features large CloudTec elements, the largest of any in On’s line-up, that provide the ultimate amount of cushioning and bounce with every stride. Fit-wise, the shoe runs small so it’s recommended to size up. They kept my legs feeling fresh, and I enjoyed the sensation of the rocker, especially in the final miles of longer training runs.

LISSA ZIMMER, Vancouver, B.C. – An elite marathoner with a 2:42 PB set in 2016 and trail runner with a goal of racing a 50 kilometre one day.

On
Cloudvista

4/5 Stars | Men | 8.1 oz | 6 mm Drop | $199
www.on-running.com

The latest addition to the On Cloud line has a big name, but the ride is not as beefy as you might expect. With a double layer of CloudTec support underfoot, it feels lighter, smoother and more agile than your average maximum cushioning shoe. Due to the unique technology, you get firm comfort rather than soft and squishy support. The tread is barely there, so it eats up harder surfaces with a minimum of fuss.

KEITH BRADFORD, Calgary, AB – Elite masters runner, coach and crisis communications consultant who has worked with athletes at multiple World Cups, World Championships and Olympic Games.

Velocity Nitro 2

I logged over 1000 kilometres on the roads (and treadmill) this winter in this shoe. The Nitro foam midsole felt plush and flexible underfoot. It was a game changer for me providing a soft and comfortable landing on the roads. It had a really nice balance of comfort, flexibility, lightness and cushioning. The upper was durable and flexible with good breathability and the tread had good grip over snow and fine gravel paths. I plan to keep it in my next rotation of shoes.

Out of the box I loved this shoe! The velocity Nitro 2 felt lively, fast, cushy and lightweight. The Nitro infused midsole on EVA really hits the mark, and whilst the ride is not quite comparable to many carbon offerings, it’s not far off, and won’t break the bank! The upper is plush, with an adequate toe box and the outer provides great grip on wet pavement and smooth trail. A really fun and lively shoe, ideal as a daily trainer that provides outstanding value. Perhaps fits a little large.

These shoes were a dream come true for a runner with plenty of foot issues. I have arthritic feet and a Haglunds deformity on my heel, and when I put these on, I had no pain at all. I could wear them all day! Lots of support and room for my toes, but a supportive heel cup. I found them light and cushioned, an incredibly smooth ride!

These shoes were a dream This shoe is light, comfortable and stable. It has a relatively high heel stack that provides good cushioning. My favourite training shoe has been the Saucony Triumph, so the fit seems familiar to me although the toe-box feels slightly bigger. The tongue and upper are soft and comfy. I wore these for a speed workout and they were smooth, agile and responsive. I’ll definitely be buying more of these shoes.

Gorun Razor Excess

The Razor Excess is incredibly light for the amount of cushioning it packs. As a non-plated shoe it still provides great bounce and spring while performing all different types of workouts: hard, fast intervals; tempos; and steady longer runs up to 30 kilometres. I suggest double knotting the laces to decrease their tendency to slip, but overall it’s nice to have a shoe that can go fast, and feel stable all at the same time.

This is a legitimate “nothing to it” light, well-built, running shoe for your faster days. Designed with a durable mono-mesh and polyester knit upper that holds its form and fits well and results in having a sleek and not overly broad toe box. To sweeten the mix the Razor’s light carriage rides over a foam midsole that cushions a fast forefoot strike and quick turnover well. This midsole is separated from the road via a coating of Goodyear-produced rubber that provides durability and grip to the shoe.

Fli-Lyte 4

4/5 Stars | Women | 6.9 oz | 3 mm Drop | $170

An excellent lightweight and comfortable shoe choice to get in some summer miles. The Fli-lyte 4 has a very wide toe box allowing your foot to move and expand naturally, while the heel fits snug and laces have no problems staying tied. I prefer the 3 mm drop and soft cushion for shorter faster runs, but the outer seems durable for longer runs and different weather conditions as well. Simple, comfortable, affordable, and effective.

A comfortable shoe, it has everything you expect and want from a minimal drop road shoe (5 mm) but still lots of cushioning. It holds your foot nice and snug, is supportive and solid around the foot and ankle. The sole is light enough to give you a quick response under foot yet sturdy enough to handle some gravel or light trail if you find yourself on a mixed path. Recommended for anyone looking for their next road shoe and like a wide toebox.

I tested this shoe during a high intensity workout of cardio mixed with some heavy lifting. I instantly found the minimalist sole provided the stability I needed for lifting while my foot did not feel restricted. Being so close to the ground allowed me to grip with my feet so I did not feel off balance. The versatility of the shoe also worked well while doing cardio intense exercises during my workout. This holds up to my level of training and intensity. I highly recommend it.

This ‘do it all’ shoe blurs the line between support and freedom of movement. From CrossFit to the half-marathon this shoe has the ability to bring you back to your natural way of moving. My balance and proprioception since wearing these has improved immensely. Never before have I noticed the incredible difference between running on gravel compared to asphalt. This shoe has given me so much feedback it’s completely changed the way I think about footwear and my feet.

These shoes deliver exactly as promised. They have maximum flexibility, minimum cushion and pure freedom of movement. The rubber outsole provides adequate protection from debris, and I was able to run with a natural stride without concern for bruising my foot on a rock. These shoes have a wide forefoot and secure heel. My only complaint was that I could feel the outer seam on the upper, so I had to wear socks with the shoes instead of going barefoot.

I’m a big fan of minimalist running. I took them out for a light seven kilometres where the shoes felt comfortable, followed by 25 kilometres on varied surfaces and they performed well. On both runs, I had the minimalist sensory feeling in my soles but didn’t have issues on any surface, from pavement, to hardpacked tails, to gravel roads. They are roomy in the toe box but did not hug my feet. Amazing for casual running, walking, or wearing all day but not for speedwork/racing.
