Add to this, dwindling daylight hours making the days feel shorter, colder weather that makes us want to hibernate and additional expenses due to gifts, food and everyday life. It all equals the potential for overwhelm or stress. 

While our bodies are well equipped to handle small doses of stress, long term or chronic stress places excessive demands on our body’s nutrient and vitamin stores. This over-activation of our nervous system can compromise immune function, disturb insulin resistance, and mess with our ability to fall asleep. All of which, when not dealt with, can lead to greater dis-ease in the body and poor health outcomes.

Fortunately, there are strategies to mitigate stress and botanicals that can help lessen the blow on our bodies when we do feel overwhelmed by the demands of the holidays. 

L-Theanine

L-Theanine is naturally found in green tea and is a calming amino acid. Studies have found that l-theanine can help to reduce nervousness and promote a state of relaxation. It is thought to reduce the feelings of stress by increasing alpha waves in the brain which help to foster a sense of calm and focus, while not causing drowsiness. It also works quickly, taking 30-40 minutes following consumption to induce a state of calm. AOR’s Zen Theanine provides an optimal dose of pure l-theanine. Holy Basil

Also known as tulsi, holy basil is used in herbal medicine as an adaptogen to help increase energy and resistance to stress. It is the make-or-break difference—the primary variable that determines success or failure. As a result, everyone is in the business of mindset mastery, strengthening their mentality to accomplish their grandest goals and dreams. So, this begs that all-important question…

How can you master your mentality? Fortunately, there are several proven strategies that can enhance your mindset and change the way you think. 

Practice Calculated Hardships

All self-improvement begins when you strengthen your thinking.

Strengthening your thinking comes when you put yourself through difficulty. And putting yourself through difficulty facilitates mindset mastery. For this reason, I am a big advocate of calculated hardships. What is a calculated hardship?

It’s the process of deliberately putting yourself in uncomfortable situations daily.

  • Taking cold showers instead of warm ones
  • Using the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Training outside instead of in the gym
  • Talk to strangers while you’re out and about

These little habits force you outside of your comfort zone.

The result? You develop thicker skin. A stronger pain tolerance. And mastery over your mindset. I currently practice (or have practiced) all the above suggestions. From my experience, they are simple but powerful strategies that can strengthen your mentality.

Give them a try—you won’t be disappointed.

Upgrade Your Inner Circle

You are who you associate with.

Don’t ever underestimate the awesome force that your inner circle has over your mindset, behaviour, and life. Every so often, you should audit your friend group. You want to ensure these individuals are lifting you higher and contributing to your growth.

Does that mean you need to get rid of all the friends who aren’t as ambitious as you?

Not necessarily. It really depends. You might have to eliminate some friends from your life, based on whether they support your growth or not. Other times, though, you may just have to manage the distance and limit your time with them.

Take it on a case-by-case basis.

Honour Your Commitments

Failing to keep little commitments is death by a thousand cuts.

Each promise you fail to keep to yourself or others—regardless of how small or “innocent” it may seem in the moment—becomes a little heel biter that gnaws away at your integrity. Do that enough times, and your mindset will become as weak as your resolve.

The solution? Keep your word—do what you say you’ll do.

Whether you’re making a commitment to yourself, an associate, or an acquaintance, you need to honour those promises. This strengthens your resolve, builds personal integrity, makes you more reliable in the eyes of others, and produces the mindset of a winner.

Mindset mastery develops when your word becomes your bond.

Final Thoughts on Mindset Mastery

Life will treat you cruelly if you fail to master your mindset.

For this reason, it’s a critical element of yourself that needs to be refined. And you can do so by following these tips. These are proven strategies I’ve used in my own life to strengthen my mentality and achieve my goals.

Every October, participants from across the country and around the world unite on the streets of Chicago to conquer 26.2 miles and call themselves Bank of America Chicago Marathon finishers.

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon welcomes more than 54,000 participants on a 26.2-mile tour of 29 of the city’s unique neighborhoods. With a start and finish in Grant Park, this is a race you won’t want to miss!

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is known for its flat and fast course. The race starts and finishes in Grant Park and travels through one of the world’s most magnificent cities. The course has produced seven world records, many national records and countless personal bests. Runners enjoy the support of 1.7 million spectators as they run through 29 neighborhoods.

Annually, hundreds of thousands of spectators line the streets cheering on participants from the start line to the final stretch down Columbus Drive. As a result of the race’s national and international draw, the Chicago Marathon assists in raising millions of dollars for a variety of charitable causes while generating over $683 million in annual economic impact to its host city. Running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is the pinnacle of achievement for professional athletes and everyday runners alike. On race day, runners will set out to accomplish a personal dream by reaching the finish line in Grant Park.

Registration for the 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Chicago 13.1 and Shamrock Shuffle is Now Open

The Bank of America Chicago Distance Series connects the Chicago Marathon, Chicago 13.1 and Shamrock Shuffle 8K Run in a unique challenge that rewards participants who finish all three events in 2026 with an exclusive medal and guaranteed entry to the 2027 Chicago Marathon. Individuals interested in participating are encouraged to get their names in early to ensure they can take part in the series.

Guaranteed entry applications

Guaranteed entries for the 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon are available for:

· Time qualifiers

· Legacy athletes

· Charity runners

· International Tour Operators

· 2025 Bank of America Chicago Distance Series finishers

Access to guaranteed entries is only available during the application window (Tuesday, October 21st to Tuesday, November 18th, 2025). 

All applications are reviewed and verified by the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Upon completion of this process (which can take up to 10 business days), individuals are notified via email of their approval status. If the application is approved, the entry fee is automatically processed. If the application is not approved, the entry is automatically switched to a non-guaranteed entry application and the applicant is entered in the drawing.

Those who do not qualify for a guaranteed entry can apply for the non-guaranteed entry drawing. At the conclusion of the application window, names will be selected from the full pool of non-guaranteed entry applications. Applicants will be notified via email of their entry status on Thursday, December 11th.

COURSE TIME LIMIT

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has a course time limit of 6 hours and 30 minutes, a 15-minute mile pace. An event vehicle following the last starter will maintain a 15-minute mile pace indicating to event and traffic safety personnel when it is time to re-open the course to vehicular traffic. You must maintain a 15-minute per mile pace (approximately) or faster to receive full on-course support from aid stations and traffic safety personnel.

Participants who finish after 4 p.m. may not be recorded or published as official finishers and will not receive full on-course support from aid stations and traffic safety personnel.

Marathon registration is open from October 21, 2025 at 10am CT and closes November 18, 2025 at 2pm CT.

Run for a Cause: Why It Matters

The latest model in the Adizero Boston series is a continuation of adidas’s commitment to research and create the best performance shoe for athletes. The Boston shoe was first introduced in 1982 as ‘just’ a road shoe, but after its integration into the Adizero line in 2010 athletes started to take notice, adding it to their performance shoe roster.

What is most immediately striking is its classic look—clean and sleek with the prominent adidas 3-stripes. It speaks: “I mean business…and that is speed.’

So what makes it so fast? Elite runners Rachael McIntosh and Matthew Travaglini tested the shoe and here is what they had to say on its features.

Feature – Lightweight Upper with padded tongue and heel collar for a more secure comfortable fit.

“I personally have a wider forefoot and did not find this shoe to be too narrow, the upper was breathable and light so it will be good for the summer training into your fall races.  As with all high stack shoes, cornering is always a challenge, but I did find there was enough support throughout the upper that for the few corners I ran at speed, I did not feel like I was about to roll off the side of the shoe,” says Travaglini.

“The laces and tongue stay in place, while the fit is true to size with just enough room for even a slightly wider foot,” adds McIntosh.

Feature – Lightstrike Pro Midsole has 13.8 per cent more foam than its predecessor giving it lighter cushioning resulting in a comfortable and softer feel underfoot.

Feature – Inserted into the Lightstrike Pro midsole are EnergyRods, a technology that is commonly found in the adidas Adizero line. These are five carbon composite bars, that mimic the metatarsal bones in the foot that not only supports the midsole but gives the boost the foot needs in the forefoot. More flexible than carbon plates, they propel the runner forward giving more energy return.

“I found it to be highly responsive with good return on energy, and with the EnergyRods, these will last longer than just a standard high cushioned training shoe. I liked that this shoe was fast out of the gate, despite the high cushioning, I could start quickly and settle into my pace without feeling like I was fighting against the shoe,” says Travaglini.

“The Lightstrike Pro foam and EnergyRods provides a soft yet super responsive ride that is great for any pace,” adds McIntosh.

Feature – Lighttraxtion Outsole with Continental™ rubber is a new feature for adidas. When traction is so important Lighttraxion offers a firm grip and a slip-free toe off that helps prevent falls on damp surfaces. This durable outsole makes the shoe perform well and efficiently in wet or dry conditions.

“I like that they are sticking with the Continental rubber in the high wear areas because I want a shoe that can not only feel light and springy throughout one workout, but one that will not wear out on me week after week and month after month as I prepare for my next race,” says Travaglini.

“I found the shoe lightweight yet supportive, had no break-in period, and was instantly a comfortable and smooth ride,” adds McIntosh.

The adidas Adizero Boston 13 got a big thumbs up from the IMPACT Magazine testers for speed, power and performance.

“This is a great shoe for runners who prioritize speed, comfort, and versatility. It is a great option for runners wanting a high-performance shoe that can do it all and look great while doing it! Whether you’re doing interval sessions, speed runs, or logging longer miles, I would reach for the Boston 13,” says McIntosh.

“adidas did a good job with this shoe; it will be an effective shoe to add to your rack for everything from easy runs to pure speed sessions,” adds Travaglini.
