Stress Less, Enjoy More: Support to Ease Holiday Stress https://impactmagazine.ca/news-and-views/sponsored-content/stress-less-enjoy-more-support-to-ease-holiday-stress/ Thu, 11 Dec 2025 18:31:10 +0000 https://impactmagazine.ca/?p=64498 The holiday season is upon us and with it comes preparation for parties, decorating the house, shopping, baking and hosting. Add to this, dwindling daylight hours making the days feel shorter, colder weather that makes us want to hibernate and additional expenses due to gifts, food and everyday life. It all equals the potential for overwhelm or stress.

While our bodies are well equipped to handle small doses of stress, long term or chronic stress places excessive demands on our body’s nutrient and vitamin stores. This over-activation of our nervous system can compromise immune function, disturb insulin resistance, and mess with our ability to fall asleep. All of which, when not dealt with, can lead to greater dis-ease in the body and poor health outcomes.

Fortunately, there are strategies to mitigate stress and botanicals that can help lessen the blow on our bodies when we do feel overwhelmed by the demands of the holidays.

L-Theanine

L-Theanine is naturally found in green tea and is a calming amino acid. Studies have found that l-theanine can help to reduce nervousness and promote a state of relaxation. It is thought to reduce the feelings of stress by increasing alpha waves in the brain which help to foster a sense of calm and focus, while not causing drowsiness. It also works quickly, taking 30-40 minutes following consumption to induce a state of calm. AOR’s Zen Theanine provides an optimal dose of pure l-theanine. AOR is a Canadian natural health manufacturer that prides itself on science-backed formulations and effective health solutions.

Holy Basil

Also known as tulsi, holy basil is used in herbal medicine as an adaptogen to help increase energy and resistance to stress. Adaptogens act like a stress “thermostat”, helping your body return to a balanced state. When stress pushes you too high, leaving you wired or anxious, or too low, making you feel tired or depleted, adaptogens help to support a more stable middle ground. Holy basil has a long history of use and is a cherished herb in Ayurvedic medicine. In this traditional medicine system, it has been employed for everything from colds to cardiovascular concerns. Holy basil contains numerous active constituents including tannins, phenolic compounds, and flavonoids. It is these constituents which are thought to impart its many health benefits. AOR’s Holy Basil uses an extract from India of wildcrafted holy basil leaves.

Cortisol Adapt

Cortisol is your body’s main stress hormone. It’s designed to give you quick energy, help you stay focused, and keep you moving when the going gets tough. This is critical when you need to run away from a cougar but, a little too much for holiday preparations. Elevated cortisol levels disrupt sleep, increase inflammation in the body, and hijack more pertinent bodily functions like digestion and immune function.

AOR’s Cortisol Adapt combines stress-reducing adaptogens in a synergistic formula to address the perception and impact of chronic stress on the body. This formula contains ingredients clinically proven to support healthy cortisol levels in times of stress, while also addressing the negative impacts of chronically elevated stress such as inflammation and immune suppression, cognitive disturbances, insomnia, brain fog and irritability.

It contains bacopa monnieri, sometimes called Brahmi, another prized plant used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Bacopa helps to support cognitive health and brain function which can be impaired due to cortisol dysregulation. Because chronic stress can inhibit immune function and increase inflammation, cordyceps are also included in this formula. Cordyceps are a source of fungal polysaccharides with immunomodulating (i.e. immune activating) properties and a source of antioxidants.

Ashwagandha is also included. This revered herb in Ayurvedic medicine is known for its effective adaptogenic properties. It is widely used to combat stress and fatigue, support mental clarity, emotional balance, and restful sleep. It can help to alleviate symptoms such as irritability, difficulty concentrating, and sleeplessness. Specifically, it has been added to the formula due to its ability to reduce chronically elevated cortisol levels and C reactive protein, which is a biomarker of stress mediated inflammation.

There is also CurQfen®, which provides a source of curcumin with enhanced plasma bioavailability to further reduce the negative physical effects of chronically elevated cortisol. And a proprietary blend of magnolia bark and phellodendron called Relora® is included in Cortisol Adapt. Numerous clinical studies demonstrate that this combination reduces the effect of transient and chronic stress and supports mood and feelings of vigor, reduces evening salivary cortisol (yes to good sleep!) and improves mental fatigue. AOR’s Cortisol Adapt is available online and in store.

Above all, remember that lifestyle changes can significantly reduce your stress during this holiday season. Daily movement, practicing good sleep hygiene, prioritizing your sleep, making time for mindfulness and yourself, all make a huge difference in how you manage and mitigate the impact of stress on your body.

Simplify where you can, slow down when it matters, and let the season feel lighter. Wishing you a calmer, more magical holiday season ahead.

2025 Trail Shoe Review https://impactmagazine.ca/gear/gear-reviews/2025-trail-shoe-review/ Thu, 06 Nov 2025 17:42:34 +0000 https://impactmagazine.ca/?p=64043 We teamed up with some of Canada’s most accomplished runners from across Canada to test-drive the best trail running shoes of 2025 so you can find your perfect match for any terrain. Their insights and reviews will help you find the perfect pair for your next adventure. This year’s guide is packed with picks that inspire exploration and elevate performance. After all, every trail tells a story and we want to make sure yours starts with the right shoes.

Drop it like it’s hot – the ‘drop’ explained
This is the difference between the heel and the forefoot measurements, or in other words, how much your toes ‘drop’ below your heel. Why is this important? Because a higher drop can lead to more heel striking and also transfers some strain away from the lower leg and up towards the knee. A lower drop will shift the load further down to your calf. Check with an expert, choose what feels comfortable to you and take into account your running mechanics and history of injuries.

The Terrex Agravic 3 felt comfortable, plush and nimble on the rocky terrain around Batawa Ski Hill. A versatile shoe that performs well on both gentle gravel trails and technical terrain. I loved its balance of underfoot feel and cushion, making it perfect for easy recovery runs on soft ground. Lightweight with good grip, the 4mm lugged Continental rubber outsole gripped in nicely on sharp turns and rolling terrain.

EMILY SETLACK, Trenton, ON – Canadian 2:29 marathoner and mountain runner.

The Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra is fast! With Adidas Lightstrike Pro foam and energy rods, this shoe provides excellent forward propulsion and energy return that is best suited for fast running on non-technical terrain or gravel. I appreciated how well the ALTRA Experience Wild retains the light and bouncy feel of the road version. The Experience Wild is a 4mm drop shoe with enough cushion to feel plush and bouncy without a high stack. The sole offers great traction in steep and technical terrain without feeling heavy or slow on smoother trails. A great shoe for fast, long and hilly trail workouts on all terrain.

Barely there, just enough to care. With its luxurious wide toe-box and natural foot-shape is there is plenty of room for toe splay and foot play. This is a benefit for people who run long and want comfort rather than the tunnel-fit of a conventional trail shoe. The barefoot feel you get resulting from the close to and zero-drop leaves you with a no questions asked, grounded feel on rocky terrain and trails alike. Staying stable and trail connected is easy with the Vibram “mega-grip”.

PETE ESTABROOKS, Calgary, AB – One of IMPACT Magazine’s Canada’s Top Fitness Trainers, ultrarunner and coach is happiest when running in the mountains.

A winter-specific adaption to the renowned Norvan 4, this shoe adds a GORE-TEX upper and ankle-gaiter to combat harsh conditions. While the shoes responsiveness, grip and agility are retained from the Norvan 4, a large flaw in the design is only having a single quick-lace entry through the upper which prevents the shoe from comfortably cinching down to provide a performance fit.

I put the Fuji Lite on and felt confident enough to go straight into a speed training workout on my local trail and was not disappointed. It is fast and lightweight, with a lugged outsole that gives confidence over the trails, grass and roads. It is an excellent fast trail shoe and versatile for everyday running. The upper is very comfortable and I like the lacing system with the elastic lace garage for keeping things tidy. I could see racing shorter single track trail races in these shoes and relying on them for winter running and trail speed days.

This workhorse shoe has made improvements in weight, responsiveness and traction with its latest version. The shoe would improve flexibility and ground feel by removing the unnecessary rock plate. While the upper felt compliant and durable, the laces and eyelets do not cinch down and form a secure foot hold; this is especially a downfall for narrow feet as the shoe runs wide and long.

The Brooks Cascadia 19 delivers stability and support with its outer design and built-in rock plate, while still feeling soft, responsive, and shock-absorbing underfoot. It’s relatively light for a trail runner, making it versatile for long runs or rugged terrain. The traction is great, and it has breaking lugs on the back to support with downhill traction. The shoe fits true to size, but if you typically wear wide shoes, go for the wide width option as the standard width I found to be a touch narrow.

Right out of the box, I’m impressed. The outsole is the standout feature of this shoe. It’s grippy and ready to tackle technical terrain. True to its name, the Pure Trail X delivers a connected feel to the trail. The combination of foam, firmness, and the shoe’s sturdy outsole creates a super stable trail running experience that will keep you upright in some of the gnarliest terrain. I hadn’t run in a Craft before, but this one may have just converted me. The shoe is ultra-light and incredibly responsive; as soon as you lace it up it feels alive, driving you to pick up the pace. The mesh upper is breathable and lightweight, yet the reinforced toe box gives confidence if you catch a branch or rock. The build feels solid overall. When running at a good pace it feels smooth and stable with good rebound, and high-traction which excels across conditions and terrain, giving you the traction and footing you want when the surface changes.

3.5/5 Stars | Womens | 336 g | 8 mm Drop | $160

My favourite feature of this shoe is how well it keeps my feet dry during long, wet trail runs. The upper is made with OutDry waterproof technology, which seals out water while still allowing the shoe to breathe. Even after soggy runs, my feet stayed dry and comfortable. The Konos feels soft underfoot and absorbs impact well, making it great for longer runs or recovery days. However, I wouldn’t recommend this shoe for runners with narrow feet or those who prefer a snug, locked-in fit. Overall, this is a versatile, entry-level trail runner that shines in wet conditions and offers plush cushioning.

Having not run in a Columbia brand shoe before, I was pleasantly surprised with the Columbia Konos Trillium ATR. Designed predominantly as a trail shoe, the Konos Trillium transitions very well to a variety of surfaces including light trail, gravel and even road (think gravel bike…but for your feet!). The higher stack height midsole gives a cushioned road shoe feel on hard surfaces, yet still maintains a stable and responsive feel on the trails. This is a highly versatile “one shoe quiver” that performs well on a variety of surfaces and won’t break the bank.

The Helly Hansen Kestrel TR offers solid grip and cushioning with a roomy midfoot and wide toe box. However, its sharp taper into the toe cap may cramp bigger toes, and the loose midfoot fit requires tight lacing that brings the eyelets close together for a secure hold. The cushioning strikes a good balance—comfortable without being too soft. Overall, a well-built trail shoe that suits runners with a high, broad midfoot but may not fit everyone perfectly.

This shoe is built for the long haul! I took the Mafate 5 straight out for a wet and muddy long run. The aggressive outsole immediately inspired confidence in slick conditions. The platform is stable and soft, without feeling completely disconnected from the terrain. This would be a great choice for those looking to log big miles in challenging terrain, while easing impact on the body. I’d be remiss not to mention the Neon Rose/Black colourway – while surely not for everyone, this should be a hit.

The shoes felt surprisingly lightweight thanks to the Float Pro midsole and provided great tactile trail feedback underfoot. The most striking feature of this trail shoe was the Vibram rubber outsole that has well over 100 tiny grippy lugs that I haven’t seen before on trail shoes. After running on various surfaces, this grip felt best suited for hardpacked trails or pavement, and not for muddy or loose rock trails. The Tomir is a versatile trail shoe, and this Gore-Tex version is perfect for longer wet weather trail runs in varied terrain. It performs well at speed on the flat trail, but running the technical single track is where it shines. The grip and deep lugs of the outsole make the shoe rugged and trustworthy over the rocky, technical terrain I run on. I like the tongue, and the flat laces, as they provide a non-slip and precise fit, but was surprised there was no lace storage; a feature I have come to appreciate in premium trail shoes. Midlife Momentum: The Power of Strength Training Through the Menopausal Transition

Dr. Leigh Gabel, PhD

Bone loss during menopause can sneak up on us, but it doesn’t have to. Strength training is one of the most effective ways to protect bone density, maintain mobility, and stay strong through midlife and beyond. Menopause is a natural transition, and with the right tools, we can move through it with power and resilience.

Dr. Leigh Gabel, assistant professor in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, studies how movement shapes bone health from youth to menopause. Using advanced imaging, her research reveals how physical activity strengthens bones and helps prevent decline across life’s stages.

Strong Today, Independent Tomorrow: Power for Life, at Every Age

Dr. Matt Jordan, PhD, CSCS

Our independence depends largely on healthy muscles—but aging and injury can quietly chip away at that. The good news? Muscle isn’t passive; it responds to stress at any age. While we often think of training as building size or strength, lessons from working with athletes show that power—the ability to move quickly and forcefully—matters too. It helps Olympians win medals and older adults cross the street safely. Science shows we can train power into our 90s. It’s never too late to start—the best time is now.

Dr. Matt Jordan, assistant professor in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, studies how strength training and rehab shape neuromuscular performance. A consultant across six Olympic Games, he bridges science and sport to prevent injury and elevate athlete performance.

Finding the Sweet Spot – Returning to Activity After Injury or Surgery

Dr. Laurie Hiemstra, MD, PhD

You love to be active, and you thrive on movement. But when an injury that requires surgery interrupts that, it can feel like everything changes in an instant. Recovery after an injury to your bones and joints is rarely a straight path. Push too hard, and you might slow healing. Take it too easy, and you may miss the chance to regain full strength. Our research is helping people find that “sweet spot”—the right balance—to return safely and confidently to the activities they enjoy. Make this injury your last one by taking a smart, intentional approach to returning to sport and activity.

Dr. Laurie Hiemstra, clinical professor at the University of Calgary and orthopaedic surgeon at Banff Sport Medicine, specializes in knee ligament injuries. Her research advances ACL reconstruction, injury prevention, and surgical outcomes, while championing gender diversity in orthopaedics worldwide.
Dr. Lauren Beaupre, PT, PhD

Why (and How) You Need to Exercise… Even If You Have Sore Joints or Arthritis

Dr. Lauren Beaupre, PT, PhD

We often want to slow down or stop our activities to manage sore joints related to arthritis. But exercise is even more important when you have arthritis. Strong muscles support sore joints and allow you to do more with less pain. We’ve learned that doing the right exercises the right way means that you can stay active and engaged in your preferred activities. Don’t let arthritis stop you from living your best life.

Dr. Lauren Beaupre, professor and Dr. David Magee Endowed Chair at the University of Alberta, researches how to improve recovery and access to care for people with arthritis or joint replacements, with a focus on virtual rehab for rural communities.

Train Fast – Race Fast | adidas Adizero Boston 13 https://impactmagazine.ca/news-and-views/sponsored-content/train-fast-race-fast-adidas-adizero-boston-13/ Mon, 25 Aug 2025 15:11:19 +0000 https://impactmagazine.ca/?p=63514 Just when you thought shoe technology had reached its pinnacle, along came the adidas Adizero Boston 13 to raise the bar.

The latest model in the Adizero Boston series is a continuation of adidas’s commitment to research and create the best performance shoe for athletes. The Boston shoe was first introduced in 1982 as ‘just’ a road shoe, but after its integration into the Adizero line in 2010 athletes started to take notice, adding it to their performance shoe roster.

What is most immediately striking is its classic look—clean and sleek with the prominent adidas 3-stripes. It speaks: “I mean business…and that is speed.’

So what makes it so fast? Elite runners Rachael McIntosh and Matthew Travaglini tested the shoe and here is what they had to say on its features.

Feature – Lightweight Upper with padded tongue and heel collar for a more secure comfortable fit.

“I personally have a wider forefoot and did not find this shoe to be too narrow, the upper was breathable and light so it will be good for the summer training into your fall races.  As with all high stack shoes, cornering is always a challenge, but I did find there was enough support throughout the upper that for the few corners I ran at speed, I did not feel like I was about to roll off the side of the shoe,” says Travaglini.

“The laces and tongue stay in place, while the fit is true to size with just enough room for even a slightly wider foot,” adds McIntosh.

Feature – Lightstrike Pro Midsole has 13.8 per cent more foam than its predecessor giving it lighter cushioning resulting in a comfortable and softer feel underfoot.

Feature – Inserted into the Lightstrike Pro midsole are EnergyRods, a technology that is commonly found in the adidas Adizero line. These are five carbon composite bars, that mimic the metatarsal bones in the foot that not only supports the midsole but gives the boost the foot needs in the forefoot. More flexible than carbon plates, they propel the runner forward giving more energy return.

“I found it to be highly responsive with good return on energy, and with the EnergyRods, these will last longer than just a standard high cushioned training shoe. I liked that this shoe was fast out of the gate, despite the high cushioning, I could start quickly and settle into my pace without feeling like I was fighting against the shoe,” says Travaglini.

“The Lightstrike Pro foam and EnergyRods provides a soft yet super responsive ride that is great for any pace,” adds McIntosh.

Feature – Lighttraxtion Outsole with Continental™ rubber is a new feature for adidas. When traction is so important Lighttraxion offers a firm grip and a slip-free toe off that helps prevent falls on damp surfaces. This durable outsole makes the shoe perform well and efficiently in wet or dry conditions.

“I like that they are sticking with the Continental rubber in the high wear areas because I want a shoe that can not only feel light and springy throughout one workout, but one that will not wear out on me week after week and month after month as I prepare for my next race,” says Travaglini.

“I found the shoe lightweight yet supportive, had no break-in period, and was instantly a comfortable and smooth ride,” adds McIntosh.

The adidas Adizero Boston 13 got a big thumbs up from the IMPACT Magazine testers for speed, power and performance.

“This is a great shoe for runners who prioritize speed, comfort, and versatility. It is a great option for runners wanting a high-performance shoe that can do it all and look great while doing it! Whether you’re doing interval sessions, speed runs, or logging longer miles, I would reach for the Boston 13,” says McIntosh.

“adidas did a good job with this shoe; it will be an effective shoe to add to your rack for everything from easy runs to pure speed sessions,” adds Travaglini.
